From SSC’s Pupil Council: We also get a day of SPIRIT WEEK to nominate a theme, and for Day 4, we chose to take a break from the usual dress-up and instead challenged everyone to come to school bringing ANYTHING-BUT-A-BAG!

While wearing our SSC Uniforms with pride, we showcased our creativity and ingenuity by leaving our backpacks and school bags at home and instead transferring the contents to pots and pans, trash cans, paint cans, cabinets, coolers, a wagon, a safe, shopping carts, shoe boxes and water bottles to name a few!

And SPIRIT WEEK DAY 5 brings in the grandest effort with FANDOM FRIDAY!
On this day, SSCians, Teachers and Staff became someone else.
One pupil asked: Have you seen Peppa Pig?
Tita Trixie and Ms Myrra welcomed everyone at the lobby as Top Gun Maverick and a Minion, respectively!
When asked, “Who are you?”, Geunhu answered, “I am the main character in The Uncanny Encounter, a KDrama!”
Quite funny, though, for some kids in PreSchool and Lower Primary who were unaware because their Parent was the one who dressed them up, i.e. Men in Black!
The IT Department was very creative, dressed up as delivery apps: Grab, Lalamove, Angkas, Food Panda and Maxim!

Witnessing more beloved characters and roles in the Grand Parade held around the campus, there was no denying that the waving, high-fives and big smiles were the best ending we could have for #SSCspiritweek2023!

First Communion and Confirmation

Archbishop Palma is always overjoyed when we hold another First Communion and Confirmation rite for SSC pupils and their families because, despite being a non-sectarian school, we provide this Catholic milestone opportunity.

Those who put it together likewise experience the same joy, proud to have been part of and witness to the Catholic education and growth of SSCians who sign up for After School Catechism classes. Kids did work hard to prepare for these special sacraments, and their dedication and devotion are truly inspiring!

We would also like to thank Sisters Madeline and Elneliza who took the helm as Catechism Teachers, SSC’s Admin Team that organised the rites and the families involved for their cooperation and support. All together, may we continue to inspire and empower our children to grow in faith.

From answering fruit riddles (English) to counting and gathering fruits (Maths), and even savouring a refreshing fruit cup (Science), they experienced a truly fruitful adventure! 🍎🍌🍇🍓

Congratulations to SSC’s JUNGOLFERS for a strong performance in the recent Junior Golf Tournament, Cebu Visayas Leg, held at the Cebu Country Club last Apr 12-13.

Meanwhile, many tout Golf as the most difficult sport to play because it is not just about physical abilities and commitment, but it comes with a strong psychological element as well. This young, hear what our jungolfers say about their journey so far!

Maths isn’t just numbers and formulas; its a subject that can help Pupils develop a genuine love for learning! Thank you to Singapore School Manila’s Ms Analei Atienza for hosting a SINGAPORE MATHS TRAINING by Dr Lai Chee Chong last April 20-21 in the SSM campus.
Resident SSC Maths Teachers Brazil and Meleiza were in attendance and loved every minute of it. Now they cannot wait to transfer what they have learnt, unlearnt, relearnt to the rest of their colleagues! As a result, SSCians can definitely look forward to more fun and engagement during Maths periods!

It’s Eureka Maths and Science Fest @ SSC, and we continue with our #Unselfie campaign, this time to blaze sustainable trails! One of the fun activities was bringing back ‘Anything But a Bag’ from Spirit Week, but this time, Eureka version!
Embracing an eco-friendly mindset, our trailblazers crafted and innovated environment-friendly alternatives to their daily school bags, showcasing these in school last 25 Apr. Their creations, made from paper scraps to plastic bottles, brought amazement and wonder to all who saw. Indeed, creativity did meet sustainability, inspiring a greener future. What an AHA MOMENT; congratulations to those recognised for their extraordinary efforts!

Andre is thrilled to land in ADMU’s top 60 incoming Freshman applicants and just one of 8 of the 60 Merit Scholars accepted into the highly selective Management Engineering programme. He flew to Manila to attend the special reception last Apr 29, meeting the Dean, Faculty Members, and current ME students. As per Andre, “they all shared that ‘ME’ is going to be rigorous and challenging. But I am nevertheless up for the challenge and ready! As a future Atenean, I say: Ad majorem Dei gloriam!”

Meanwhile, Elysha and Dwayne belonged to the Top 200 ADMU applicants (out of 18k) and landed in the Director’s List!

All 3 graduating SSCians’ applications were accepted via their IB or ACET performance. Good Job! #SSCyeswecan!

SSCians love and know their Maths and their Science! And this was manifested in the recent Eureka 2023 Math and Science Trivia and Olympiad focused on SUSTAINABILITY! It was an exciting intellectual and creative journey as pupils from Pre-School to Pre-University explored numbers and scientific ideas as tools for sustainable solutions to global problems. They honed their problem-solving abilities through thought-provoking scenarios while nurturing a deep empathy for our environment. Way to go, #sscTRAILBLAZERS! #blazingSUSTAINABLEtrails

EXTERNAL EXAMS ARE BACK @ SSC!

And our Secondary 4 and Pre-University 2 SSCians sitting for the Cambridge IGCSE and IB Diploma, respectively, couldn’t be more nervous but prepared and determined!

The Teachers were likewise on edge since it’s been three years since we last held externals due to the pandemic. But as we all know, nothing is impossible when everyone comes together and gives their all! And indeed, exams have been up to standard and smooth.

Look at the INSPIRATION WALL offering encouragement via words (each IB candidate received a letter from their Teachers), novena and candle lighting; it sure reaped some calm before the (exam) storm.

Bottom line, as we always remind each other here, #SSCyeswecan! SSC is the only school in Cebu that offers both the Cambridge IGCSE and IB Diploma, the world’s most recognised university qualifications.

‘Dad and/or Mum, will you be my classmate?’

Our Pre-K Warriors asked that question, and their Parents excitedly answered YES! Last 09 May (Tue) saw our ‘classroom’ abuzz with excitement as Dads and Mums stepped into the shoes of our Pre-K Pupils!

We kicked off the fun with a MOVE activity and got to know each other through a game called ‘That’s My Child!’ Then, our Pre-K Pupils and their New Classmates guessed the fruits inside the box. The catch? They need to say it in Mandarin in relation to what they have been learning in class.

To top it all off, they went ‘Fruit Shopping’ and formed trees out of fruits. It truly created a lasting memory for our Pre-K Warriors and a perfect opportunity for Parents to see their kids in action.

Our Kinder 2 Pupils have been exploring one of their favourite topics during PIAZZA TIME: AEROPLANES and flying!
And thanks to Captain Jithin and Ms Jasmine Jin from our school community, we were able to extend and provide hands-on learning for our PreSchoolers when we visited Continental Aero Flying School at Mactan International Airport last 18 May!

‘I want to be a pilot!’
‘Flying a plane is so cool!’
‘Aeroplanes fly because of their engines and wings.’
‘I love the simulators. It’s like flying a real plane!’

This out-of-campus trip to the hangar really brought on wide eyes, listening ears and jaw-dropping expressions as kids learnt more about this mode of transportation. Now everyone wants to fly, be a pilot, or even an astronaut!

Our most immense gratitude to the CEO or Chief EMPOWERING Officer of MAXIMUM IMPACT PHILIPPINES and Lead Coach of the Academic of Extraordinary Teens (AET), Coach ADRIAN DING, for stopping by last 18 May and rejuvenating Parents and Teachers present anew on how to do better in this job called Parenting (esp Teens)!

Two days earlier, we also had AET’s Coach Nestea enthusiastically engage our Secondary pupils on how to build real inner confidence.

Despite it being at the end of the school year and seeing us wrap up academic lessons, there is no ceasing our personal development as a person and in our roles in life!

It’s Flores de Mayo @ SSC!

Following tradition for the Catholic members of the school community, it was with gratitude that we got to hold this celebration, complete with SSCians volunteering to be angels and letter carriers. Parents helped lead the rosary, while Teachers and Staff served as the choir!

It was a befitting end-of-school-year event where we are just filled with unity and gratitude for a safe and wonderful SY2022-2023!

Last week, and not since 2019 – we had our FRIENDS FROM UMAPAD revisit our school and interact with their friends from Lower Secondary!

Everyone had such a great time playing games, but the highlight of the gathering was sharing their aspirations and dreams. Through this activity, we hope kids at this age realise this early their co-existence and dependence on one another, despite their differences and similarities. And from this, they will move forward not only focused on their development but likewise rooting for each other’s success!

PreSchool PLUS (our after-school programme) went BAKING!
What a way to celebrate the bond and friendship they have developed in one school year by mixing dry and wet ingredients, making frosting and decorating their cakes!

‘Twas SSC’s first-ever Graduation Ball, and it came WITH A CAUSE! We are proud that 37% of the outfits worn that evening were either RENTED, BORROWED OR REWORN! And congratulations to all those that went home with SUSTAINABLE FASHION AWARDS, not to mention cash prizes from our School President! We’re glad SSCians made an effort by borrowing a 75-year-old vest, renting a glamorous dress, or rewearing a family heirloom. The star of the night had designed her dress when she was just 12 years old!

Thanks to SSC’s Pupil Council and the Pre-University SSCians that worked hard to make this event happen! Even SSC Alums were present, given they didn’t get to have a ball during their graduating year!

Last 10 Jun (Sat) marked the official end of their PreSchool years, and their speeches made for a morning of celebration, reflection and inspiration for the great start of their educational journey.

K2’s Commencement Day, albeit fun and memorable with their stage performances, is also a testament to the importance of having a solid foundation rooted in having that cheerful disposition towards school and learning in tandem with their classmates, Teachers, Parents and the rest of the community!

They are definitely most ready for the next chapter starting this Aug 2023… PRIMARY SCHOOL! Go go SSC Trailblazers!

And here are the rest of the culminating activities, from PreSchool to Secondary, as we wrap up School Year 2022-2023! We call them our Year-End Dates, as it was literally held on the last day of school!

-SSC PreSchoolers had one last round of extra playtime and fun with their schoolmates at the Merlion Centre!
-LPS SSCians went to PlayLab and were exceptionally excited and energetic while exploring with their friends!-UPS Warriors had such a great time at the Museum of Emotions; no one wanted the day to end!
-And as for our Secondary Trailblazers, the Merlion Center turned into a movie house, a movie date complete with popcorn and hotdogs!

Now, time for our SCHOOL BREAK! Rest and rejuvenate, SSC!

From Teacher Solbi, Department Coordinator for Upper Primary: And last but not the least, we saw our Primary 6 cohort wrap up SY 2022-2023 last 10 June (Sat) by graduating from Primary School and moving to their next chapter in Secondary School! Their Commencement Day was an afternoon filled with heartwarming presentations, from the speech choir paying tribute to Parents, to meaningful individual speeches reflecting the aspirations of our Primary 6 Dreamers (read the few lines found in the photos). Furthermore, we admire how this batch supported and helped each other throughout the Commencement Day rehearsals.

“We, the P6 graduates, dream to be the best we can be and prove that SSCians can do hard things.” This is what our graduates collectively expressed. Hence, we are excited to witness them blaze trails in Secondary School. Congratulations and slay, P6 Graduates! 🎉

After 3 years of non-exam routes due to the Covid-19 pandemic, EXTERNAL ASSESSMENTS for Cambridge IGCSE at Secondary 4 (or Grade 10) level resumed this 2023 at Singapore School Cebu!

We applaud our resilient CLASS OF 2025 for shining through the challenges that included distance learning throughout their Secondary 3 year and additional school disruption caused by the damage from Typhoon Odette in Dec 2021.

Finally, EXTERNAL ASSESSMENTS for the IB Diploma also resumed, albeit the first time for SSC to sit for such, after becoming an IB World School in 2018.

Like most cohorts making up the Class of 2023, it has been an incredibly challenging time; therefore, we hail their determination to march on. More so for these two SSCians who achieved the Top 2 highest marks for the school, at 43 and 40!

And Dwayne and Chelsea just started their University journey, choosing to attend NYU and Boston College, respectively! Just this morning, during the School Assembly, they shared some insights for their schoolmates to hear and be inspired by the many possibilities that await them! More notably, both shared the same goal of giving back to the Philippines! #SSCyeswecan! #sscWeCanDoHardThings!

From SSC School President Trixie Suarez: For most trips overseas, I include an opportunity to visit schools to learn, exchange best practices, and discover new things about education and the future.

On my recent one, I dropped by the International School of Boston. Thank you to Richard Ulffers, Head of School and Elizabeth Geffray, Associate Director of Admissions, for welcoming me to your beautiful campus in Cambridge.

Next, I want to thank my classmate whom I’ve known since elementary school, Dr. Jen G. Dy, who gave me an insider’s tour of Northeastern University. Jen is currently the Director of Experiential AI Postdoc Education at Northeastern’s Roux Institute. I met some of her students in action in their jaw-dropping labs at the Interdisciplinary Science & Engineering Complex. I encourage SSCians to work their way here and be part of the amazing things being worked on for the future!

Has it been 5 years since SSC became an IB World School? We’re due for an EVALUATION VISIT!

So came Mr Ong and Ms Yorke representing the IB last 22-23 Sep, celebrating how much progress we’ve made despite the pandemic (that resulted in distance learning for 2 school years), plus the devastation from Typhoon Odette that disrupted classes in 1Qtr 2022!

-Hosting the IB evaluation team was a collaborative effort. Thank you to our dedicated Teachers, Pupils and Parents for your efforts!
-The strong sense of community, paving the way for an amazing learning environment, was observed and is a major strength of SSC!
-We are committed to setting even higher standards for our 13-year-old IB and Cambridge school!

And how do you cap a week-long celebration @ SSC?
Answer: With a performance at the Marco Polo Hotel Cebu for the National Day of China dinner hosted by the Filipino-Chinese Community. We are so proud of all the hard work and eagerness of both our Mandarin Teachers and Primary School SSCians as the performance covered a speech, a Cups routine, a Chinese Yoyo exhibition and a CPop dance!

Of course, back in school – we continued to embrace our cherished annual traditions, beginning with wearing red or Chinese outfits to school and the enthralling Dice Game, uniting Pupils, Teachers, and Staff. Our mooncake-making activity also delighted all, with everyone savouring their delectable creations! Lastly, we proudly presented the YCT and HSK awards to selected SSCians who sat for it last May 2023. Congratulations to our successful candidates!

Rise and shine; it’s October 5! Here’s greeting our 100+ SSC Teachers with this year’s theme: HAPPY VALENTINE’S WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY!
Thus, the many hearts in this post, given the teaching profession, is also best described as a work of HEART!

‘Twas Back-to-back BLESSINGS for TEAM SSC last week with the celebration of World Teachers’ Day (05 Oct) followed by In-Service Day (06 Oct)!

The World Teachers’ Day celebration was very sweet, literally! Thanks to SSC’s Pupil Council for the Valentine-themed event and to the community for the flowers, chocolates, and letters. The program and performances in the upper years were also full of love; Valentine’s in October, how amazing is that?

Then In-Service Day followed and thanks to SSC’s TLC (Teaching and Learning Centre) for curating a holistic day that touched on both professional and personal development!

Lower Secondary goes BCL or ‘Beyond Classroom Learning’ with S1’s recent visit to National Museum of the Philippines – Cebu.
With excitement (to be out of their classmates) and joy (to be with classmates in a venue outside of school), they deepened and extended their understanding of story structures for their English class and explored primary and secondary sources for their History class, all while glimpsing into the past. Have you ever heard of a PLATE PARTY? What’s more, by 3-5 year olds!
Teacher Mabz here, PreSchool Department Co-Coordinator, also taking care of PreSchool’s After School Programme – PreSchool PLUS.
The kids have been bonding, and out of a lunchtime conversation came the idea for this party after they shared their love for making their food!
The PLATE PARTY showcased their developing fine motor skills, independence and, after, dancing skills as a result of their Music and Dance classes.

DEFINITELY VIBRANT is SSC’s 13th School Year as the Activities Department brings back in fuller force…AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS AND CLASSES! With the 3Es we see – Energy, Enthusiasm, Engagement – ASSURED GROWTH is surely on its way. This is just the start. Looking forward to how far you can go with your interests, SSCians!

Congratulations to Luke, Santi, Yuki and Kyle – for a brave performance in the 1st Annual Copa Dumau de Jiu Jitsu Philippines 2023 held in Robinsons Galleria Cebu last 21 Oct 2023!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the ‘gentle art’, is a martial art and combat sport that allows a person to successfully defend themselves against a larger, stronger attacker. Getting on the mat takes guts, and remembering the techniques takes discipline, calm and focus. Job well done, SSCians! Keep it up and always remember: #sscWeCanDoHardThings!

It was NONSTOP Games, Action and Laughter at PARENTS’ GAME NIGHT last Fri, Sep 20! Thank you to all who came and in doing so, we also got the opportunity to know each other better! As they say, it takes a village to raise a child and boy are we a FUN village here at SSC, based on the event’s success!

Another BCL (Beyond Classroom Learning) event, this time for Secondary 2 and thanks to PROFOOD INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION for being our learning partner for this one!

This occasion seamlessly connected S2’s lessons in Science regarding fruits and plants, as well as FCE on the topic of food processing.

Witnessing our pupils’ boundless curiosity, their Eureka moments, and, later, hearing their insightful reflections on their BCL was genuinely fulfilling for those who organised this collaboration. Check out what the Teachers’ said about this and even our School Nurse who tagged along. Once again, thank you, PROFOODS!

From SSC’s ACTIVITIES DEPARTMENT: Definitely vibrant and assured is the growth of any child when they likewise pursue EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES! In this feature, we celebrate the current passions of 3 young SSCians.

Deanna (Primary 4) made waves at the USC 75th Founding Anniversary Swimming Competition on 15 Oct, while Shawn (Pre-K) conquered various Pushbike Challenges in Sep-Oct in Cebu and Bacolod, with the KC46 Pushbike Grand Prix 2023 as the latest triumph. And we also have Juri (Primary 4), who bagged 6th place in the IronKids SwimRun Event last 11 Nov at Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

Relive the thrill of Secondary and Pre-University’s GOODWILL GAMES 2023!

‘Twas 2.5 days that culminated weeks of preparation in Cheerdance, Presentation of Advocacies, Game Prep and Teamwork! Undoubtedly one of the best and most thrilling GGs in the School’s history, and that can only be credited to all stakeholders for giving their all in doing their share: Organisers, Participants, Teachers, Team Captains, Ambassadors & Ambasaddress!

SSCians continue to receive international recognition for their academic excellence! This time, we release the REACH Maths and English results plus that of ICAS Maths, Science and English, which our Pupils sat for last July and August with students specifically from Singapore. Note that this 2019, ICAS administered by UNSW, was redesigned to cater to high potential students thus providing additional challenge to the most able!

Congratulations to our top rankers who continue to show how solidly SSCians fare with their peers from Singapore!

Ciao from SSC PreSchool Heads, Teachers Ricka and Mabz! Along with SSC’s School President, Ms Trixie Suarez – they just returned from Reggio Emilia, the Italian city best described as having the best kindergartens in the world.

Joining 200+ educators worldwide, everyone was in awe of how Reggio Emilia reared their infants, toddlers and preschoolers in their first 5 years of life. They best epitomise the Indian proverb: It takes a village to raise a child. It is easy to understand why their educational pedagogy, which includes features like ateliers, progettazione, and collaboration in the piazza, has become renowned.

And so we come home Reggio Emilia-inspired and eager to apply our latest takeaways to SSC PreSchool, where creativity, exploration, and collaborative learning can thrive even further. Our commitment to nurturing young minds in an inspiring, child-centric way is now even more robust. We can’t wait to embark on this exciting journey to reimagine education through the lens of Reggio Emilia!

And Team SSC brings home 7 Trophies, 112 Gold Medals and 83 Silver Medals from the recent World Scholar’s Cup GLOBAL ROUND in Manila held last 05-11 September 2019!

This includes the #1 and #3 spot from a sea of 875 debaters from 28 countries!

Thank you for making your SCHOOL and CEBU, PHILIPPINES proud as the hosts call out “SINGAPORE SCHOOL CEBU” in a global stage as big as last week’s. Now, it’s off to an even bigger stage, as all are qualified to compete in the Tournament of Champions to be held at Yale University this November! Go Team SSC!
