Goodwill Games Lower Primary School

‘Teamwork’, ‘Do your best’, ‘Play fair’…these were the messages our Team Captains had for our LPS Warriors for Goodwill Games 2021! And last 04 Nov, we saw just that amongst the Teams!

‘Winning and losing…both are part of life. You cannot always win, you also cannot always lose. You have to get up after each loss and try again.’ – Tita Trixie, Goodwill Games Founder

This rang true in this unforgettable online event as up until the very end, even with some Teams behind by a number of marks, our LPS SSCians never gave up, cheered on each other and gave it their very best! We are mighty proud of what they have learnt and applied! Who is this year’s Champion? We will soon find out!

Goodwill Games PreSchool

SSC’s Goodwill Games 2021 is at a fever pitch; this time, it’s PreSchool’s turn! Everyone got to play! That meant everyone got to try and practise teamwork. More notably, not everyone got to win; but that just meant a learning opportunity to be a good sport!

And that is what the GOODWILL GAMES is all about, on top of the fun and cheers!

Go Team SG, Go Team PH, Go Team UK! PreSchool’s Goodwill Games aren’t over yet! And good job Teachers for all the creative and innovative games played via zoom!

Living Rosary

Pandemic or not, all the more with the Pandemic, SSC’s Catholic Community gathers for the annual Living Rosary every October.
Parents and Pupils took turns reciting via zoom, while over at the Merlion Centre, the School Admin and Teachers sang and put the rosary together
We look back to previous Living Rosaries in person, and we are hopeful such will be the case come next year. Let’s continue to #sscPRAY.

Community Conversations with a Queen

From SSC’s School President, Ms Trixie Suarez: “It’s not every day we hear someone speak that FRANK when it comes to life lessons, but it was refreshing, invigorating even. As a result of this pandemic, boldness is essential. Thank you to Dr Queena Lee-Chua (Teacher, Psychologist, Author and much more) for joining us in a community conversation, sharing the TRUTHS about education, parenting and pupils/teens and what we can do to thrive in a post-pandemic world.”

Goodwill Games Upper Primary School

Exciting!
Happy!
Challenging
Fun!
Optimistic!
Exhausting!

Above were just some of the words our Upper Primary School pupils exclaimed to describe their GOODWILL GAMES’ online version last 22 Oct!
Their priceless expressions and reactions, coupled with their non-stop banter, showed how deep was their engagement. The physical games remained this year, but a significant uptick in the mental challenges made them rack their brains! But thanks to their staying focused and remembering the value of teamwork and sportsmanship, the games turned out so positive, albeit exhausting (but with a grin!).

Superb job to the organisers and Teacher Marshalls who made yet another Goodwill Games most memorable, despite the pandemic and having to do it online!
Congratulations to P4A, the House of Loyalty, for winning the House vs House Competition. As for this year’s Goodwill Games Team Champion, we’ll soon find out because we still have Round 2 coming up!

Goodwill Games Secondary & Pre-University House Vs House

How long has it been? Let’s count: 1 Term + 1 School Year + another Term = still no in-person school in the Philippines. But here at SSC, we continue to make the best out of the situation by soldiering on and holding once again one of the biggest school events ONLINE. The GOODWILL GAMES are here, starting with Sec & Pre-U’s House vs House competition that culminated last 15 Oct!

It’s good to see Pupil engagement remain strong with fun and laughter matching SSCians’ competitive spirit! Kudos to the organisers for such creative and challenging games. Nice to see the reflections of each House via the Six-Word Story Challenge in the end. Thus, does it still really matter who won this competition? Yes, says our Sec and Pre-U SSCians! We will find out when all marks are in at the end of our Goodwill Games Season this November!

AMO 2021 Awardees

Last November 2021, a delegation of SSCians competed virtually in the AMERICAN MATHEMATICS OLYMPIAD (AMO). And the results are out! Congratulations to our medalists, and here’s to that continued resilience, choosing to push oneself and see how far you can go despite the odds this pandemic has brought us.

RAI Stories

Back to School and Happy New Year! It was good to see each other again. While a few still couldn’t make it online due to Typhoon Rai ripping both power and internet connection here in Cebu, a good majority of our SSCians were back on SSC-DL and raring to swap RAI (Real Accounts & Insights) stories with their Teachers!

Everyone had a RAI , holiday, and even a Covid story to tell. Beyond resuming classes for academic learning, we spent time fostering empathy, care and compassion as we listened to each other share FEAR, SADNESS, SHOCK, CONFUSION, HOPE, FUNNY MOMENTS and GRATITUDE. There were so many stories it was a struggle to fit them all here!

#SSCstaysafe

18th Harvard Model Congress Asia

After Typhoon Rai ripped power out along with internet connection, the fate of our 10 SSC Delegates competing in Harvard Model Congress Asia held virtually last 07-09 Jan 2022 was hanging in the balance. But all 10 decided to proceed and found ways to make it still. Some experienced being cut off during the 3-day event but soldiered on. Just being able to join was already a feat in itself. However, our brave SSC Delegates still mustered to bring pride to their school and country for winning 6 individual awards and 1 group award, emerging for the 2nd year in a row, as the #2 Overall for most-awarded school!

Congratulations to:
1) MJ Cobrito, S4 (Best Delegate – WHO)
2) Andre Quiokeles, Pre-U1 (Best Delegate – WHO)
3) Eddie Onglatco, Pre-U1 (Best Delegate – UN Human Rights Council)
4) Steven Patrick Yu, S4 (Honourable Mention – UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific)
5) Chung Bi Yoon, S4 (Honourable Mention – European Union)
6) Dwayne Khenley Ong, Pre-U1 (Honourable Mention – USSC on Foreign Relations)

Group Award: MJ Cobrito and Andre Quiokeles co-authored a Bill (International Genome Editing Bill) presented to the Secretary-General and the Deputy Secretary-General.
A BIG SHOUT OUT likewise to the rest of the 10 Delegates who, even without a coach this year – managed to work and help each other in this endeavour! We are so amazed and proud of you! Continue to soldier on, SSCians!

Term Outputs

Today and tomorrow, from PreSchool to Secondary, we have our first round of Parent-Teacher Conferences. And one of our evidences to show how much our Pupils have progressed are their TERM OUTPUTS! More than just presenting their knowledge, it is the confidence, discipline, timeliness, creativity and responsibility that they get to foster! #SSC‘sgotgrit! #sscSteadyGoReady! #SSCyeswecan!

TED Tok Exhibition

ToK! Every IB Student would tell you how much they love this core subject or the opposite! But here at SSC, thanks to Teacher Sneil making it interesting and challenging in a good way, SSCians get to develop their thinking skills further!

This past month, there was a TED ToK Exhibition for Batch 2022 and two extraordinary speakers.
Miguel de Jesus: Cancer Biology PhD candidate and a graduate student researcher of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Soon to be Dr de Jesus presented an exciting overview of the many aspects of cancer biology and its highlights as a branch of the natural sciences. His valuable insights and focus on relevant and pragmatic information about the field provide a unique experience for our Pupils that will serve as an appropriate springboard to discover how knowledge is developed and acquired in the natural sciences.

Dr Chin Reyes, PhD: Applied Developmental Scientist and Director of the Child Study Center of the Yale University School of Medicine. What a privilege it was to hear her speak about how the branch of human sciences was more than a mere aspect of science but also a tool utilised to fuel societal change. From her talk, we find out how her research findings could influence today’s educational system and criminal justice issues.
Thus, TOK? We like it!

Goodwill Games Secondary & Pre-University

The pandemic has pushed us all to evolve, so here we are for the 2nd straight school year, having our Goodwill Games online. And what do we see from our Secondary and Pre-University warriors? Everyone levelled up even further, most notably the Team Cheer Competition!

And with the stiff competition, as per Teacher Janice, Head of School for Secondary and Pre-University: “2 out of 3 will not be happy with the results. But we still do it because we grow as a result; this is even so much more than winning!” So, Sec & Pre-U SSCians, continue with that growth mindset.

Who will be this year’s GOODWILL GAMES winners? We will finally find out in tomorrow’s (19 Nov) Awarding Ceremony!

Pets Day!

Thank you to SSC’s Pupil Council for revving up school this past week with their PETS DAY event in PreSchool and Primary School! Come to think of it, this event was not considered before for in-person school! Thus, Distance Learning does have its perks. This past week, we had our pets in school with us! Thank you to all who took part and congratulations to those who got awarded for their efforts!

Primary School Warrior!

An unstable internet connection from Typhoon Rai? Power outage even? How about an Omicron Surge?

Well, none of that stopped our Primary School SSCians from continuing to learn! Of course, there were a few bumps here and there, but that’s what makes the journey worthwhile and the learning more authentic and meaningful.

Albeit a bit wounded, their “just do it” attitude, and genuine love for learning keeps these Primary School Warriors going in school!

#SSCwarriors

Chinese New Year

虎年大吉 Hǔ nián dàjí

From Singapore School Cebu: Best wishes for a prosperous and happy new year of the TIGER! Check out our SSCians, from PreSchool to Pre-University ROAR in school today as we usher in Chinese New Year tomorrow!

It is also an excellent opportunity to thank our SSC Mandarin Teachers for their dedication and hardwork to make SSCians speak the language! Xie Xie, Laoshi!

Spirit Week Day 3 Crazy Hair Day

And last but not least, CRAZY HAIR DAY to culminate SSC SPIRIT WEEK last Dec 2021!
A Drive Thru Fundraiser was actually to follow the day after. But that was the day (16 Dec) that our life in Cebu was upended again due to Typhoon Rai. But SSCians are Warriors that will always choose to progress despite the challenges! And we got our crazy hair here to prove our eager spirit!

Spirit Week Day 2 Logo Day

Day 2 of Spirit Week last Dec 2021 saw everyone donning the school’s LOGO to show off their School Spirit! With this year’s theme, it’s something you can’t buy but rather create! And create, both Teachers and SSCians did!

Spirit Week Day 1 Hat Day

Do we still remember our last week of school for the Year 2021? No, not Typhoon Rai but SPIRIT WEEK, where we showcased our SCHOOL SPIRIT, starting with HAT DAY!
Despite the pandemic and continued online learning (aren’t we going two years now?), it’s good to see our SSCians remain engaged!

SSC resumes F2F Classes!

It has been an electrifying past 2 days as SSC resumes F2F classes!

1 – After 2 years of campus closure in the Philippines (well, 5 days short), Bennett of Pre-U 1 arrives first and early!

2 – With Health Declaration done before arrival, one goes through an overhead thermal scanner before being allowed in! Even DepEd Region VII’s Dr Apao tried it herself!

3 – HELLO CLASSMATES!!! Once again, there’s noise in the lobby and arrival halls! Welcome back to school, Upper Secondary and Pre-University SSCians! Next week, Lower Secondary joins in too!

4 – For this 1st Phase, only FULLY VAXXED Pupils, Teachers and Staff are allowed to join!

5 – We are the 1st school in Mandaue, Cebu, to reopen; thus, the heads from the Philippine Department of Education were present to witness this special milestone!

6 – Presenting SSC’s Hyflex-equipped classrooms where classes can be concurrent (F2F and Online attendees in the same room)!

7 – Physics and Biology class was fun and intense at the same time!

8 – More importantly, returning to F2F classes on campus meant being with friends and peers again!

9 – Graduating Batch 2022 was working on their Graduation Song (an original composition) in the Music Lab!

10 – It was a great first 2 days back! MORE!

2nd Vax Date @ SSC

No more tears! And look who was here for the 2nd Vax Date @ SSC last Mar 17… BUMBLEBEE!
It was a much faster 2nd dose for the 5-11-year olds as they already knew what to expect! Most now sat independently, ready for their shot! SSC’s Pupil Council was there to hold some games, along with this time, DC Superheroes.
Of course, this wouldn’t be possible if not for the great effort of Mandaue’s City Health Office and the DOH + all the Parent donors who made this milestone even more special! Such great community spirit! Good Jab!

Literary Fest

Presenting this year’s LITERARY FEST with the theme, ‘Kumbati, SSC Warriors! Soldiering on with Strength and Compassion’, SSCians once again proved how it is to be Warriors. They practised kumbati through the different school-wide and department activities such as poem recitation, vlogging, live news reporting, extemporaneous speech, and much more. More importantly, they have learnt the importance of having the Kumbati Spirit that can overcome challenges. Kudos to another successful event this year, Warriors! #SSCKumbati!

Lunch Dates with Tita Trixie & Pupil Council

It’s a (LUNCH) DATE! Hi everyone, it’s SSC’s Pupil Council! This School Year, we volunteered to organise the Lunch Dates that SSCians started having with Tita Trixie (our School President) since online school started.

Yes, it’s ONLINE and FUN! More than playing “Deal or No Deal” or “Who’s Most Likely To?”, however, it was the opportunity to check on everyone that made it all worthwhile.

We talk about Covid and Typhoon Rai. We talk about the first thing we’ll do when F2F classes are back. We also talk about our well-being and our anxieties.

17 LUNCH DATES DOWN…11 MORE TO GO! Thank you to all SSCians we’ve had a date with so far for being so open and enthusiastic. And to the rest, we look forward to our date coming soon!

vax Date @ SSC

Vax Date @ SSC! What a rewarding and heartwarming day it was yesterday (24 Feb 2022) when Singapore School Cebu hosted the vaccination of 5-11-year-olds in partnership with the Mandaue LGU and City Health Office!

The atmosphere was celebratory as this age group got to have armour against Covid-19, too! Even though they were scared a bit, the Marvel Superheroes present reminded them they were braver than they believed.

We also realised how much the kids miss interacting with others and being in school. Overheard were many quips of it being the best day ever, and Parents were grateful it lessened the stress (of the jab), if any!

And this milestone wouldn’t have been possible without the extraordinary efforts and generosity of the school community and friends. It sure did take a village to jab 180 children yesterday! Good Jab!

PreSchool’s 100th Day of School

They have been counting since Day 1 of School and finally last 11 Feb (Fri), the 100th Day of School a.k.a. the BEST DAY EVER finally came for our SSC PreSchool Warriors! Vroom, vroom – Tita Trixie picked everyone up in the biggest jeep in the world for their safari adventure. Dressed for the trip and with their binoculars, off everyone went to discover new things! Plus, let’s not forget doing the many 100th Day of School traditions at SSC, as you can see in these photos! And that includes the coolest giveaway ever, a personalised sticker pack because our PreSchool Warriors are now 100 Days smarter! Good job, and thank you, PreSchool Team and Teachers, for putting this all together!

SASMO 2022 Awardees

SSC is proud to share results of the recent SINGAPORE and ASIAN SCHOOLS MATH OLYMPIAD (SASMO) which had 30,000 participants from 28 countries.

Once again, it was another remarkable performance as 18 SSCians received Gold, Silver, Bronze and Honourable Mention for their Maths abilities.

Despite close to 2 school years of Distance Learning, we applaud the efforts and resilience of our Pupils and Teachers to continue maximising their potential.

Congratulations and never give up!

UPS Warrios are Back in School!

Our UPS Warriors are also back in school!

Read through each collage of photos for a glimpse of what has been a great 2 weeks thus far of Hyflex classes (F2F and Online concurrently) for our UPS Warriors! It’s definitely AMAZING to be back!

P1 & P2 Transition Date

“I am the happiest! This is a dream come true! I don’t want to go home anymore!”, exclaimed a Primary 1 Pupil.

Along with the Pupils, Teachers too were the happiest with P1-P2’s Transition Date last 07-08 Apr respectively which also happened to be the same dates for P3’s first F2F classes this School Year!

With how active our P1 and P2 Warriors were during their Transition Date’s MOVE, Storytelling, Braille, and Playground Activities, they surely showed us that they are ready for F2F! And our P3 Warriors? They were such independent and resilient Warriors!

See you soon again on campus, LPS Warriors, this time with P1 and P2 joining us for F2F come May!

PreSchool Transition Date

“I want to go to the real school!”
“I wish we could learn and play with our classmates inside our classroom.”

These are just some of our PreSchoolers’ wishes for two years now. Although they are happy and enjoy learning online via SSC-DL, they have always fervently wished to physically be with their classmates and Teachers. After patiently waiting for so long, the day has finally come!

SSC PreSchool organised a Transition Date in preparation for Face to Face classes for the youngest lot in school. MOVE activity, check! Story Time and Arts, check! How about a trip to the Library, Classrooms, and Playground…check!

And these 3-6-year-olds exclaimed: THEY ARE READY FOR F2F! See you again soon on campus, SSC PreSchool Warriors!

SASMO

SSCians for SASMO (Singapore and Asian Schools MATH OLYMPIAD)!
Thanks to our campus reopening, we can do this again: compete in one of the biggest Math competitions in Asia organised by SIMCC (Singapore International Math Contests Centre).

Good luck to the 35 chosen qualifiers from SSC (from Upper Primary to Pre-University) who came to the campus last Saturday (02 Apr) to sit for SASMO! Despite the shift to online learning over the past two pandemic school years, we hope to see results that somehow confirm their Math proficiency (SASMO touches on intuition, reasoning, logic, creative and critical thinking) can still match those from Singapore and other Asian Schools.

P6 Commencement Day

Primary 4 was the last time they had “normal” school. Two (pandemic) School Years after, they are now graduating from Primary School and are off to Secondary School!
Congratulations to our Primary 6 Graduates for surpassing all challenges and what’s more, coming out SHINING!

The Merlion Centre stage came alive again last 18 Jun (Sat) for what was SSC’s 3rd In-Person Commencement Day Exercise in 3 weeks, this time for Primary 6.
Our 18 Graduates impressed everyone in attendance with their solo speeches, which albeit memorised word for word as they delivered them on stage, were communicated so genuinely. They shared, among others, the following:

‘When the going gets tough, the tough get going.’
‘Never underestimate the power of eating together.’
‘We are all connected.’
‘It takes a village to raise a child.’
‘Nothing can repay a mother’s love.’

We also give our Primary 6 Graduates a two thumbs up for executing all the performances for their Graduation with zest and hard work! Credit also goes to their Teachers/Mentors for preparing them for their big day. There’s no such thing as a perfect programme, but last Saturday was close to that! Now, off to Secondary School you go (but after a Summer Break, first)!

K2 Commencement Day

Back on Stage for their Graduation Speeches! It was the turn of Kinder 2 SSCians to hold their Commencement Day last 11 June, marking their official move up to Primary School!

And as is the tradition in SSC, all Graduates get to speak! And it looks like the pandemic and switch to online learning this past 2 years didn’t make any dent in their confidence. In front of a big audience, each graduate showcased their uniqueness, which was celebrated by the audience.

Kudos to SSC’s PreSchool Team for their extraordinary efforts and abilities in rearing our PreSchool Warriors. Likewise, we all know this wouldn’t have been possible without the Parents’ support from home, especially those who had to stand in as co-Teacher (we call them ACs) during Distance Learning! #SSCyeswecan!

Road to PREU

Are they getting ready this early? Yes, albeit the new School Year doesn’t kick off until Aug 2022, but already, our incoming Pre-University (Gr 11) Pupils came to the campus for 2 days last week to get oriented on the IB Diploma Programme! For one, the upcoming 2-year journey would need a lot of friend support, so it was good to meet new classmates. Then there are subject choices; thanks to some sample classes by the Teachers, this helped them make that decision. SSC Alumni and some Pre-U 1 Pupils were also on hand to debunk some IB myths!

Singapore School Cebu is both an IB World School and Cambridge International School, offering the world’s most recognised University Qualifications: the IB Diploma in Pre-University and the Cambridge IGCSE in Upper Secondary. Both known for their rigour, SSC provides a challenging yet nurturing school environment for Pupils to go out of their comfort zone en route to maximising their potential.

Pre-University Commencement Day

Congratulations to SSC’s Class of 2022!

As mentioned repeatedly in your Commencement Day Programme last 03 June 2022, you have been the GREATEST SHOW of grit and perseverance for finishing your Pre-U and IB DP years ONLINE for 2 School Years! Imagine how some of them only met their classmates for the first time in person one week before Graduation!

Meanwhile, we herald the extraordinary achievement of Youmin Lee and Maegan Lauren Yap, who garnered the top award for ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE.

The Graduation was a memorable one, with the Teachers surprising the Graduates with a performance on stage. The Class of 2022 then capped off their Graduation Ceremony by performing a song they wrote themselves, entitled GRADUATING; (yes, with a semicolon).

We are so proud of you, Class of 2022 and how you pulled through despite the odds (not just with the pandemic but also with Typhoon Rai).

EUREKA 2022

EUREKA!

Recognising how our planet Earth faces various global crises, our SSCians dared to A.C.T.! The Eureka 2022: Maths & Science Fest made us more Aware, Care more and Take action –as one school, as an SSCian, as a global citizen–in our tagline “Living in these challenging times, learning through crises.”

Check out the meaningful activities for SSC’s Eureka Fest that ran from 10 to 20 May 2022.

First Communion & Confirmation

Last Saturday, 21 May, after a likewise 2-year hiatus, we held First Communion and Confirmation rites again for our eligible Catholic SSCians.

Our celebrant, Archbishop Jose S Palma, was very happy to see the community gather at The Archdiocesan Shrine of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus (Sacred Heart Church). He shared that while he knows SSC is known for its academic strength, we are also putting equal emphasis on a child’s spiritual growth.

Despite the new normal of masks and other safety protocols, it was a beautiful and meaningful close to 2-hour ceremony. We are grateful to the Catechism Teachers who prepared our 47 Communicants and Confirmands months prior and the Admin Team of SSC for putting the whole thing together.

SSC is non-sectarian but offers optional after-school religion classes.

SSC’s Full Resumption of F2F Classes

With SSC’s FULL RESUMPTION of F2F Classes, our Pupils are back at the lab for experiments! An LSec Pupil even described the experience as “mind-blowing” after two school years of online science investigations! This particular lesson was all about photosynthesis c/o their Science Teacher, Andrew, likewise so happy to observe kids getting mesmerised by what was happening right before their eyes! Here’s to more Eureka in school for our SSC Trailblazers!

#SSCcares for Umapad

Php 134,796.81! That’s how much we raised in our Back To School (BTS) Fair for the benefit of our friends from Umapad Elementary School (UES). Whereas their campus still needs repair from Typhoon Odette last Dec, F2F classes have resumed. For a community that wasn’t likewise spared from the economic slowdown of the pandemic, we have pledged to provide all 900 students of UES with the daily mask wear that is mandated. Some have also shared their inability to afford school uniforms; thus, we are ready to provide such to them.

And this is possible from the efforts of the SSC Admin, Pupil Council and Houses from Secondary and Pre-University in holding the BTS Fair, where we saw our community actively participate and show their generosity. #SSCcares

At the same time, we are genuinely grateful to the School Leadership Team of Umapad Elementary School for allowing and motivating us these past 8 years to be of service and help when we can. With learning poverty currently at 90% in the Philippines, we must do our part in reducing that by working and helping one another when we can.

1st Day of School for PreSchool

After you’ve heard from the bigger kids in school on how their first day and week went, how about hearing from the youngest lot… our SSC PRESCHOOLERS!
“I’m so happy in school. It’s so much fun!” – PK Pupil
“Is it time to say goodbye already? But I don’t want the class to end!” – K2 Pupil

“We are still coming back to school tomorrow, right?” – K1 Pupil
And just like that, as if there was no campus closure for the past 2 school years, our 3-5 year-olds entered their classrooms and said goodbye to their Parents! Despite the masks, they are full of eagerness and glee!
Whee, SSC PreSchool! It’s going to be an amazing SY2022-2023 blazing trails with you!

1st Day of School for Primary

“Can we play at the playground? Can I go to Raffles Library?” – P1 Pupil
“I missed you, Teacher.” – P3 Pupil
“Finally, we have face-to-face everyday!” – P5 Pupil

Just like Secondary and Pre-University, last 17 Aug 2022 (Wed) saw our excited Primary School SSCians return to school face-to-face! The classrooms and hallways were filled again with sounds of laughter, chatter and kids playing as our Warriors mingled with each other. The Teachers, too, were delighted to see and guide their Pupils as they journey to new discoveries together.

As one P5 Pupil said, “T in trailblazer means TRY. I will try new things.” Hand in hand, let’s blaze trails this SY 2022-2023, Primary School!

1st Day of School for Sec & Pre-U

‘Twas the first day and week of School, and as one Pre-U Pupil best described it, “the crowds around the school are exactly as they should be — large and lively, as a school population should be.” Yes, we are now on FULL RESUMPTION of F2F Classes, and albeit the nervousness, most Secondary and Pre-University SSCians and Teachers were excited, elated and eager! Here are some snapshots from our first week and some reflections on how it went! Next week, we will hear it from the lower years!

Back to School (BTS) Fair

Before we go BTS (Back to School), how about a BTS FAIR and for CHARITY?! A collaboration project between SSC’s Admin Team, Raffles Library and the Pupil Council Officers of last and this school year, the BTS (Back to School) Fair previous week had all of the ingredients of a fun event!

SSCians came to collect their books and fit their uniforms while their Parents processed the Vehicle and Fetchers Passes. Led by their respective House Reps, Secondary to Pre-U 2, then readied food, drinks and game booths for everyone to enjoy! The Heads of Schools also organised meet and greet activities for new pupils, all heartily welcomed by their appointed buddies.

The best part? With a Raffle for Charity – we are very excited to find the final amount raised for the benefit of the students of Umapad Elementary School! We have pledged masks and uniforms for those who may need them as they also return to F2F classes this Aug 2022!

After this fair, all the more, we are pumped up to go BTS (Back To School) tomorrow!

UNSW’s ICAS Awardees

After two years, due to the Covid pandemic, SSCians got to sit again last Aug 2022 for UNSW’s ICAS Assessments! And here are the results for ICAS Maths, Science & English!

SSC is one of the very few schools outside of Singapore that sits for ICAS 2022 administered by SIMCC, which this year saw 9000 Pupils join, mainly from Singapore, covering levels Primary 3 to Pre-University 1 level (about 1000 takers per level). We are very proud to see SSCians rank in the top percentile! In fact, this year, we have two, in the person of S4’s Charlene Jessica Lim and Pre-U 1’s Chungbi Yoon, who garnered the top score for English for their respective levels!

Congratulations SSCians, and a special shout out to SSC’s Teaching & Learning Head, Teacher Mae Ann and Subject Teachers, who organise the school’s participation in these international benchmark assessments.

Back to School, Back to SAFETY DRILLS!

Albeit rusty from the prolonged campus closure due to the pandemic, we were reminded again of what to do in case of a fire or earthquake, including an evacuation scenario. Orientations preceded the school-wide drill, ensuring we won’t scare the little ones.

Thank you to the Mandaue Bureau of Fire Protection team that came to witness and provide their feedback regarding our drill. And kudos to SSC’s Incident & Management Team (IMT) for organising the firefighters, search and rescue, evacuation, communications and medical teams among Teachers and Staff to handle emergencies on campus.

#SSCstaysafe!

Cambridge IGCSE June 2022 Series RESULTS!

Cambridge IGCSE JUNE 2022 SERIES RESULTS are out! And it’s fantastic how S4 SSCians showed extraordinary strengths in Maths & Science last year!

SSC’s Batch 2024, in fact, defied by a vast margin the grade distribution of A* (highest mark possible) and A of all takers worldwide!

Take, for example, Mathematics. Of all takers worldwide, Cambridge awarded 24.3% the highest grade of A*, but for our SSC cohort, it awarded 91.6% the highest possible mark. Co-ordinated Sciences was 42.5% worldwide for A* and A, but 73.9% of our SSCians got the two highest marks possible.

We applaud this fantastic feat but remain steadfast in ensuring that our SSC Warriors will not only do well in such examinations but can also apply the knowledge, solve problems, and BLAZE TRAILS!

Mid-Autumn Festival

1 – Happy (Belated) Mid-Autumn Festival from SSC!
2 – Everyone came in RED!
3 – Parents who drove their kids to school got to play the Dice Game!
4 – So did Teachers…
5 – But nothing beats how Liam played the Dice Game, throwing it ALL up in the air (yes, including the bin/holder)!
6 – This celebration also made us remember the Legend of Chang’e!
7 – And with that story, we also tried our luck in shooting down 9 suns!
8 – …and the Non-teaching Staff, too!
9 – With this celebration, we also learnt good lessons.
10 – Thank you to SSC’s Mandarin Team for putting it all together!

Round 1 of Unit Tests

At SSC, we recognise the value of ASSESSMENTS for continued learning and growth. Thus, despite being on Distance Learning in the past two school years, we continued to conduct Unit Outputs or Tests. We always look forward to seeing a variety of answers that showcase a child’s uniqueness and level of understanding while ensuring the learning outcomes and standards are met and avoiding learning loss.

Last week saw our Primary School sit for their first round of Unit Tests in-person! And they shared how it is so much better, i.e. no need to upload after answering! It’s easier on Teachers’ eyes too, and who doesn’t miss marking using a ballpen again! And let’s not forget the ease of communication. The bottom line is that we see a school full of children eager to learn and discover more, so let’s do that and blaze trails, too! #sscTRAILBLAZERS!

Celebrating World Teachers’ Day 2022

From SSC’s Pupil Council: ‘Twas the first F2F World Teachers’ Day celebration since 2019, and with the help and support of the SSC Community, we were able to make it a day our Teachers will never forget, for the following 3 extraordinary reasons:

1) 859 HANDWRITTEN LETTERS FOR TEACHERS
We asked from Pre-K to Pre-University and they all answered with handwritten letters for their Teachers. It then took us quite some time and effort to fill the 859 letters into the personalised water bottles we got for each of the 92 Teachers of SSC. But we saw how happy and grateful they were upon reading each handwritten note.

2) LIKE ROCK STARS!
In the special programme we hosted for World Teacher’s Day, we called on each Teacher, to sashay down a red carpet one by one. We were pleasantly surprised that not only were there loud claps from the Pupils, they stood up, cheered and screamed their hearts out for their Teachers like they were rock stars!

3) FOOD FOR A THOUSAND!
If that’s not all, we asked our dear Parents for some food donations for our All-Day Dining Hall of Gratitude and guess what? A feast good for A THOUSAND was sent, including 5 whole lechons, lobsters, Korean food, milk tea and goodies baked by Pupils themselves!
We are so proud of how the whole SSC Community came together for World Teacher’s Day! Here’s looking forward to more meaningful milestones such as this, as we continue to BLAZE TRAILS this SY 2022-2023!

SSC Goodwill Games 2022 Preliminaries

SSC’s GOODWILL GAMES ARE HERE, and it is at FEVER PITCH (but no, not the Covid-kind)!

And SSC Parents have been coming to school for the Preliminaries to help earn marks for their children’s Teams! As per one Teacher, it was a joyous sight to see Parents play the games like they were kids too!

It’s likewise been an excellent opportunity for Parents to mingle with each other, leading to a stronger community. However, right now, it’s a Team SG, PH or UK bonding; for the competitiveness (in the most positive way) is a sight to behold! For the recent Goodwill Game Quiz, Parents even prepared notes for the Team to study!

Despite the results of the Preliminaries so far, it’s still really anybody’s game; thus, all the best to:
Team SG! 🇸🇬
Team PH! 🇵🇭
Team UK! 🇬🇧

In-Service Day Oct 2022

While kids had the day off, SSC Teachers and Staff had a full day of learning, discovery and fun! Last Friday’s In-Service Day, we may have gone overboard, in fact, by having a Learner Profile seminar in the morning, a Lunch Party hosted by Mcdonald’s and then a Well-Being workshop in the afternoon by Infinit Care. But that’s not all. We also released the teaming and held two preliminary games for the Goodwill Games Staff edition. After, everyone was genuinely fueled to the brim in mind, body and heart. What a day… what a week (still to post about World Teacher’s Day celebrations, another jaw-dropping event @SSC)!

SSCs Leadership Summit 2022

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” – John C. Maxwell

Last 30 Sep – 01 Oct, 33 SSCians elected as Pupil Council and House Officers for this SY2022-2023 stayed overnight in school for SSCs LEADERSHIP SUMMIT 2022. These youth leaders from Secondary & Pre-University underwent a series of team-building activities and group discussions. They learnt how to process one’s thoughts, feelings and realisations as they hone their leadership skills to become not just leaders but also trailblazers.

For one, they realised that as LEADERS, it is time to accept the idea that asking for help is not a sign of weakness. That as TRAILBLAZERS, it is time to take the initiative and to help others bring out their potential; and that as SSCIANS, it is essential to be more aware of oneself and one’s surroundings.

Thank you to Teacher Cathy, the Pupil Activities Coordinator, SSC’s Pastoral Care Department, Teacher Mik, Solbi, Symon and other Teachers who organised an impactful experience.

Happy World Teachers’ Day

As Henry B Adams famously said, “A Teacher affects eternity; he/she can never tell when his/her influence stops.”

Today is WORLD TEACHERS DAY and to all members of the SSC Faculty, THANK YOU, XIE XIE, SALAMAT, for all you do and more! Albeit teaching is a tough vocation, you’ve always chosen to rise above the challenges, to make school fun and nurturing, thanks to your work of heart, ingenuity and, yes – great sense of humour! Just take a look at these photos of SSC’s TEACHERS!

Wednesday and Thursday Welcome

Wednesdays and Thursdays in SSC now welcome Parents inside the campus and classrooms!

Due to Covid-19 protocols, this was not possible since the resumption of F2F classes (with the exemption of PreSchool Parents).

Primary School hallways became abuzz these past two Wednesdays as Pupils excitedly gave their Parents a tour of their homeroom and proudly showed them their school work on display. Teachers and Parents get to meet and catch up too, and you’ll witness the same in Secondary School (on Thursdays) – it’s like a reunion! Everybody is getting to know everybody in-person again: Pupils, Teachers, Parents.

Lest we forget, It takes a village to raise a child after all!

Meet the SSC PreSchool Trailblazers

We are approaching the end of Term 1, and it has been an unbelievably fruitful journey for SSC PRESCHOOL! Ask any of them, and our PreSchool Pupils will tell you how much they LOVE COMING TO SCHOOL every single day!
At SSC, we believe that ‘A happy child is an eager learner.’ True to our School Philosophy, our Teachers fill each day with fun and engaging activities, paving the way for the kids to learn quickly, including thinking outside the box. Just check out the photos to see more of our PreSchoolers’ activities inside and outside the classrooms. They become problem solvers, confident communicators and innovators. Continue having fun while learning, SSC PreSchool Trailblazers!

International Benchmark Assessments Awarding Ceremony

Finally, an in-person awarding ceremony at SSC’s Merlion Centre last 17 Nov (not since 2019)! And this covers all international academic competitions in the past 2 school years, namely SASMO (Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad) 2021 and 2022, AMO (American Mathematics Olympiad) 2021, and ICAS Maths, Science and English taken this 2022!

Congratulations to all the SSCians who ranked, received medals and certificates in these international benchmark assessments.

Do remember to make these achievements matter by applying what you know, care and take action; ACT!

Secondary and Pre-University’s GOODWILL GAMES

Oh, how the kids missed this! After 2 years of holding it online, the much-anticipated GOODWILL GAMES (this time, for the Secondary & Pre-University division) was back in-person. Not only that, for the first time, it was held for 2.5 straight days last 10-12 Nov 2022.

Highlights included:
-the closest competition amongst all 3 Teams (Team UK is this year’s Champ)
-a new and meaningful feature in the Ambassadors and Ambassadress of Goodwill (Team PH got the crown)
-hardest Cheerdance competition to judge (Team SG got this year’s trophy, winning best Cheer Captain as well)
-a fun and exciting Teachers vs Pupils match for Volleyball (Pupils, don’t give up; keep trying)
-a huge level-up in sports skills
-an event high in participation, engagement, team spirit, grit and good sportsmanship (apologies and forgiveness followed slips or mistakes)

To sum it up, as per Teacher Janice’s poem in the dedication of this year’s GG for Sec and Pre-U, we did…
FINISH with Courage, Kindness, Grit and Grace!
#SSCtrailblazers

Buhay SSCian

“What is an SSCian’s life like in school?” This is the question our P5 Pupils answered for their Filipino Term 1 Output!
“Ang mga estudyante ay nagbabasa ng libro sa Raffles Library.” (The pupils are reading books in the Raffles Library.)
“Sila ay nagsusumikap sa kanilang pag-aaral.” (They persevere in their studies.)
“Ang mga mag-aaral ay sama-samang masayang kumakain ng kanilang meryenda.” (The pupils eat happily eat their snacks together.)
With photos as proof of their answers, they gave an oral presentation of their work to various school personnel!
One group even decided to feature our Kuyas explaining that they too are ‘SSCians’, a big part of our community – SSCian Kuyas!
More than just learning the language, this activity allowed for teamwork, collaboration, awareness of self and others, confidence in communication to blossom!
Magaling, P5!

PreSchool’s and Lower Primary School’s GOODWILL GAMES

And finally, after two years of being held online, we had PreSchool’s and Lower Primary School’s GOODWILL GAMES in-person last 05 Nov (Sat) at the Dynamic Herb-Borromeo Sports Complex, and it was a blast!
Team SG – what a class act!
Teach PH – what a gallant fight!
Team UK – what an all-out effort!
CONGRATULATIONS

for winning GOLD!

Meanwhile, when asked what is more important than winning, our PreSchool and Lower Primary School SSCians said the following:
“Don’t give up when playing!”
“Keep trying!”
“Spending time with my family.”
“Respecting other people.”
“That failure is little stones to success.”
“Clap your hands when someone wins.”
“No bullying or boasting!”
This yearly family event is indeed more than just games and winning. It brings out the spirit of teamwork and camaraderie, an excellent avenue to likewise learn sportsmanship – win or lose. Lastly, it strengthens our sense of community.
Well done, Teachers, Parents and SSCians! #SSCtrailblazers!

S2 visits the Department of Agriculture

Yes, we are going outside the classroom again to extend learning!

And the first to have them is our Secondary 2 cohort, who visited the Department of Agriculture RFO (Regional Field Office) in Mandaue.

Related to their current Science lesson about plant reproduction, they were shown how to sexually and asexually plant a mango tree and tomatoes. From this pocket activity, we are also glad to see our SSC Warriors develop more empathy for farmers as they realise their importance to our food supply.

Happy Holidays!

What a Happy Holiday House Party it was on our last school day this 2022. In holiday or red/green gear, bringing food and cheer, we got to do this again (as in, not since 2019) – celebrate the coming holiday together by house/section! It was made even more special knowing this came precisely one year after Typhoon Rai ravaged Cebu. We will not forget it because it made us stronger, more resilient, more grateful, and more helpful. Keep celebrating life, SSC Community! #SSCyeswecan

P.S. Visit our FB page to see the Holiday Greetings from SSC PreSchool!

Blessings and Recognition

The School Uniforms are finally done for the 60 beneficiaries from the Umapad Elementary School. 8 graduating SSCians went recently to distribute them, at the same time, getting to know the beneficiaries a little more. It also resulted in a serious talk on the car ride back to SSC about fixing some real problems; one SSCian shared his earnest wish to be in public office one day to effect much-needed change.

Meanwhile, SSC is humbled to receive recognition from the Department of Education Region VII for being an ACTIVE STAKEHOLDER as we continue to support Umapad Elementary School. #SSCcares!

Goodwill Games STAFF EDITION 2022

And as is the routine, we wrap up the GOODWILL GAMES by December with the holding of the STAFF EDITION. And just like the Pupils’ version, commitment and teamwork greatly matter. The Staff edition also showcases what a good model our Teachers and Staff are when it comes to maximising talent and creativity and matching that with hard work and eager participation. Not to mention how to CHOOSE FUN and BE A GOOD SPORT as your ultimate goal.

Congratulations, Team UK, for being this year’s CHAMPION; the creativity showcased in your performances was impressive!
A big round of applause goes to Team PH, meanwhile, for all the extraordinary effort and accepting the 5-point loss with such grace, vowing instead to come back even stronger next year.
You are spot on, Team SG, for accepting defeat and recognising right away what needs to be done more or what can be better.

And from the Goodwill Games Organising committee, a pledge is made to keep the spirit and purpose of these games alive and evolving!

#SSCgoodwillgames

S1 visits Casa Gorordo

How about a walk through history? Our Secondary 1 cohort recently toured the Casa Gorordo Museum, enriching their understanding of artefacts and honing their note-taking abilities in one of Cebu’s historic homes that display how the Philippines evolved from a colonial to a modern culture. It was a brief yet very educational event for our S1 Trailblazers, who were amazed by the different facts they learnt and objects they saw during their visit last 03 November.

Here’s to more meaningful learning opportunities ahead of you, SSC Trailblazers!

Tita Trixie visits Schools in HK

From SSC School President, Ms Trixie Suarez: HK no longer requires quarantine; the perfect time to visit some schools and SSC Alums attending the top universities there!

Thank you for the time and exchange of best practices with the Singapore International School of HK and PLKCKY School! The interaction was extra warm and insightful as I was their first foreign school visitor and vice-versa; this is my first overseas school visit since 2019!

This HK trip was also more memorable as I finally met Millie’s co-founder Ariel Lau in person. SSC is a Millie partner school, where they provide and curate University application support for our future graduates.

Lastly, I got to see SSC Alums Jaeda (Batch 2020), Chloe (Batch 2021) and Julia (Batch 2022), currently attending HKUST. Likewise, Sam (Batch 2020) in HKU. Nothing warms my heart more than seeing our graduates carry on the SSC values of hard work, discipline, grit and a growth mindset as they continue to give their best to reach their maximum potential.

Upper Primary School’s GOODWILL GAMES

The cheers that filled the Merlion Centre last 17-18 Nov 2022 not only proved how much everyone in Upper Primary School missed having the Goodwill Games in person but how their enthusiasm never waned. UPS Warriors had their game face on as they ran, jumped, stretched and racked their brains to gain marks for their Team. Their grit was on full display as well!

Like Sec and Pre-U’s division, a new addition to this year’s GG is the Ambassador and Ambassadress of Goodwill. The Teams’ representatives shared their advocacies which inspire their schoolmates to be #Aware, #Care and #TakeAction on various current issues. Good job, representatives!

Here’s one thing unique to the UPS division: Team Processing. In between games, each Team took time to share their realizationsGOODWILL GAMES and feedback and here are some of our Pupils’ learnings which can be applied every day:
‘Strategy is important. Success is possible if you think through your actions.’
‘Don’t be a sore loser; just be happy that you worked hard.’
‘Never give up! Let’s keep our indomitable human spirit!’

In the end, the scores were no more than 10 points apart, with Team PHILIPPINES emerging on top this year!
Congratulations!

Happy Chinese New Year!

Here’s SSC greeting you all…
新年快乐 xīn nián kuài lè. Bringing in the Year of the Rabbit, Pupils have been discovering in school what Rabbit traits they can emulate: being earnest, gentle, kind and able to self-care!

‘Twas a sea of red, meanwhile, at the campus yesterday afternoon as many came to SSC’s CNY: Hop & Shop Fair! Kudos to our Mandarin Team for organising booths selling Chinese food and goodies that were manned (and some cooked) by the Pupils themselves! Kids really thrive in this SSC routine. SSCians are also quick to go around and market their goodies to fairgoers, even asking to go on stage with ad tools and posters on display. A 6-year-old Primary 1 SSCian was even overheard establishing a system for their booth, order-pay-give balloon!

The performances on stage were likewise an all-SSC cast. Lion Dance? Yes, by Lower Primary! Ribbon Dance? Yes, by PreSchool PLUS! Then, just like bunnies, many more SSCians were eager to showcase their flair on the SSC’s got Talent stage!

Lastly, many Parents in attendance shared their happiness in seeing so many people gather again as one big school community, and for the first time in 3 years, wearing masks was optional for this event!

The Trip to South Korea

From SSC School President, Ms Trixie Suarez: I was surprised and can’t thank enough Parents who went out of their way to welcome me to their home country. Such was the case when I, along with Teacher Janice (Head of School for Secondary & Pre-University), were in Seoul recently to accompany SSC delegates to HMCA 2023.

Upon arrival, Ms Hyeji already had boxes of heat packs ready for us (what a lifesaver, as it went as cold as -6 degrees)! Then on our 3rd night, a dinner fit for royalty featuring the best of Korean food, hosted by Ms Ara. I value so much also our coffee shop conversations about the past and future of our children!

SSC Alumna Youmin (Class of 2022) also took Teacher Janice and me to see her school, SEOUL UNIVERSITY (Korea’s #1). We talked about her current journey, including plans to mentor other aspirants who want to reach for the “SKY” or Korea’s Top 3, an extraordinary feat that Youmin achieved.

Thank you again for making us feel most welcome in Korea; even the weather chimed in by dropping some of the softest, most beautiful snow I have ever seen. Gamsahabnida!

A Stroll Down Broadway

It started as a casual idea among 4 Pre-U 2 pupils for their IB CAS.
Then they met Teachers Eloiza and Cathy, who told them it was a great idea and that they could help.
Then other Pupils said they wanted to join in too.
More Teachers/Mentors were then tapped to help each performance.
It just got bigger and better!
But it got tougher too, but no one gave up and instead made adjustments.
There was a lot of support.
It ended in the well applauded “A STROLL DOWN BROADWAY” held at the Merlion Centre last 15 Dec.
What a show!
Take a bow to all who made this happen!
Watch this!

HMCA 2023

Nine delegates from SINGAPORE SCHOOL CEBU just wrapped up their attendance of HARVARD MODEL CONGRESS ASIA 2023. Held face-to-face for the first time in 3 years, it made for even better government role-playing, debate and connection with hundreds of other international high school students as they tackled many pressing global issues while mentored by Harvard students.

On top of the extraordinary experience, SSC is proud to have two of its delegates go home having been recognised as BEST DELEGATE for the World Health Organisation Committee, CHUNG BI YOON (Pre-U1B) and an HONOURABLE MENTION for the ASEAN Committee, MJ COBRITO (Pre-U1A)!

Of course, the past five days have also seen our SSCians and accompanying Faculty immerse themselves in the culture of South Korea; we shall share more in a future post! For now, we say Gamsahabnida for a most memorable (it snowed one night), educational, fun and safe trip!

Millie’s Jenna visits SSC

The first day was off to an exciting start as SSC had a special guest in Millie’s CEO and Co-Founder Jenna Ahn. SSC is a Millie Partner School and, as a result, has a world-class team of mentors for University & Planning and Application. Thank you, Jenna, for flying in and inspiring our SSCians to “shoot for the moon; even if you fail, you will land among the stars.” HAPPY NEW YEAR to all!

Happy Holidays from SSC PreSchool

SSC PreSchool recorded this Holiday Video, which we want to share, greeting you all a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year! Enjoy the break with family and friends, and stay safe!

PreSchool’s 100th Day of School

Perhaps you’ve heard the loud countdown our PreSchoolers have been making leading to the milestone that they celebrate every school year… their 100TH DAY OF SCHOOL!

And what a surprise their Teachers prepared for them last 09 Feb! There were the colourful decorations, tasty treats and fun games that made for an unforgettable adventure filled with laughter and endless delight.

Of course, the traditions remained; namely the 100-Day Calendar Count, 100-Second challenge, and 100th Day MOVE! But, beyond the merriment and mirth, the 100th Day of School celebration brought valuable lessons and takeaways for both Pupils and Teachers alike. From the importance of perseverance to the joys of togetherness, the event served as a reminder to cherish every moment and embrace the journey ahead with enthusiasm and grit. Truly, it is and will always be “The Best Day Ever!”

In-Service Day with Dr Ulan

It was a day of empowerment and growth for the Faculty and Staff of SINGAPORE SCHOOL CEBU last 10 Feb (Fri) during In-Service Day. Thanks to the top lawyer-educator in the country, Dr Ulpiano ‘Ulan’ Sarmiento III, for a very engaging and powerful talk as we were all reminded anew of our ‘IN LOCO PARENTIS’ role or that of 2nd Parents to our Pupils here at SSC.

FORMATION OF CHARACTER, for example, is one duty all educators must press on even more in today’s times. With the advent of more AI-powered tools that will further upend life as we know it, the values of those behind programming these robots would be critical.

Dr Ulan also reminded us about the graduates we produce and how the latter refers to SSC as their Alma Mater, which in Latin literally translates to “nourishing mother”. So let’s go continue to teach and parent, Team SSC!

Art Fair 2023

This past week, what a showcase it has been of SSCians’ creativity, skills and talent! What’s more, this 3-day event fostered art and creativity across levels as follows:

• ART WORKSHOP for Primary
• ART TALK for Secondary and Pre-University by renowned local artist Lean Robejo
• ART TRIVIA GAMES for Primary
• LIVE ART for Secondary and Pre-University

And there was also the ART EXHIBIT featuring the many creative works of the budding young artists at SSC!

LSec’s FCE Class

Well, literally… our Secondary 2 Pupils have been cooking in their FCE (Food & Consumer Education) class 1x a week!

And they have the best time exploring and fostering their capabilities in the kitchen as lessons cover Food Preparation and other Culinary Skills. They also learn to clean up the mess after! Lower Secondary’s FCE also teaches them how to become better consumers and adapting a healthy lifestyle.

From learning different ways of cutting food, cake, and pastry making, decorating and garnishing food, and cleaning up the mess afterwards! And not only that, but they also get to digest different concepts in becoming better consumers.

Seeing them at SSC’s Food Lab is always a delight, and Teachers are always happy to taste their outputs after class. Keep cooking SSCians!

PreSchool’s Field Trip to Cebu Ocean Park!

From SSC’s PreSchool Heads, Teachers Ricka and Mabz:

The bird was on my head! It’s so cool!
Teacher! I want to bring the starfish home!
Can we go back to the Vet Lab? I want to see the tiger shark’s eggs again!

Our PreSchoolers had an amazing time on their first Field Trip since the Pandemic! And where else is the best place to go than Cebu Ocean Park! They got to explore the wonders of nature and learn about the environment in a hands-on way. From identifying different creepy crawlies and sea creatures to learning about taking care and protecting Mother Nature, there were countless valuable lessons to be learnt. It was truly an unforgettable experience that they will remember for years to come. Plus, they get to have a fun time with their classmates and schoolmates too outside the campus!

Future Careers Fair

Startup. Data Science and AI. College Study Skills. Public Health.
These were just some of the talks our SSC Pupils from Upper Secondary and Pre-University sat for in MILLIE’S recent FUTURE CAREERS FAIR.

Held virtually, the DISCOVER FUTURE CAREERS FAIR made an international panel possible. And asking our Pupils to attend it together from school made it more fun. SSC will remain earnest in providing opportunities to open up the minds and options of our Secondary Pupils as they approach their University and Career choices!

Thanks Millie – our partner for University & Career!
Keep it up, SSC Warriors – for always being open to new discoveries!

LITFEST 2023 Part 2

#UnSelfie: Blazing Trails of Empathy struck the balance between values development and academic challenge. Our SSCians not only learnt about and practised empathy through the different #UnSelfie activities, but they also demonstrated their academic prowess by competing in Department contests such as Readers’ Theatre and Speech Choir, to name a few, and the much anticipated – Spelling Bee! Congratulations to the winners!

The past two weeks have been a testament that one can strike a mind and heart balance. Check out the photos and feel the impact of this event!

Continue to #UnSelfie, SSCians!

USec’s Beach Clean Up

It came out in the papers, and we hope this example from our Secondary 4 SSCians can inspire peers to take similar action on various causes that need our attention today.

Here’s the link to the article: https://www.sunstar.com.ph/…/singapore-school-students…

It doesn’t stop here; the group of Kiana, Vivian, Noah and Jared, along with their Global Perspectives Teacher, Teacher LA, plan to go back and sustain this, inviting the rest of the school community to help.

ANTS Day

From SSC’s Pupil Council: After 3 years, ANTS Day is finally back! No, not those ants: rather, ANTS Day stands for Appreciation for Non-Teaching Staff Day!! And the Pupil Council is most proud to have organised this event alongside our School President.

As part of our appreciation, we gave our Non-Teaching Staff the AFTERNOON OFF last Feb 28! But not before honouring the 46 UNSUNG HEROES, who walked the RED CARPET accompanied by the endless cheers of our Preschool and Primary School SSCians!!

In the afternoon, we brought back W.I.S.E.S. for Secondary and Pre-University: Walking in Someone Else’s Shoes, in this case, our very dear Non-Teaching Staff! Doing this allowed SSCians to embody the spirit of LitFest 2023, blazing trails of EMPATHY to truly understand how important these 46 unsung heroes are to our school.

Thank you to the SSC Community for your support and cooperation during ANTS Day (i.e. kids had to take care of dismissal time)! Here’s to honouring our Non-Teaching Staff not just on their special day, but every day: knowing their names and greeting them with a smile every time you pass by them in the hallways!

LITFEST 2023 Part 1

SINGAPORE SCHOOL CEBU presents LITFEST 2023, with the theme: #UNSELFIE, Blazing Trails of EMPATHY!

Let’s hear it from our Litfest Organisers headed by Teachers Mia and Solbi:
Literary Fest 2023 Part 1 brings to you
#UnSelfie Challenges and Primary School’s
‘Drop Everything and Read’, woohoo!

From PreSchool to Pre-University,
We used reading and writing to blaze trails of empathy!

Read on and you’ll know more,
Our pupils’ two-week journey – meaningful to the core!

Annual School Photo

SAY CHEESE – although you may not see our smiles in this video, but definitely, this was one happy milestone we were all glad to be doing again after Covid disallowed a gathering like this. Given our growing population, we also became creative in our ANNUAL SCHOOL PHOTO formation! S S C, on its 12th School Year!

MASKS are no longer required

Some still do, while some don’t anymore. At SSC, MASKS are no longer required to be worn. And we are glad to have transitioned to this safely and securely. So what do we now see greeting us more on campus halls and classrooms? SMILES! Although judging from some of these snapshots, kids look like they cannot be bothered, deep in their school work or tasks!

At the start of this School Year, SSC announced it is transitioning to an endemic Covid-19. After 6 months, we are pleased to see we have successfully done so.

Carry on, SSC!

Friends for Umapad is back in full force!

FRIENDS FOR UMAPAD is back in full force this School Year!
Last 14 and 16 Mar, our Lower Secondary SSCians visited Umapad Elementary School and met their friends (60 beneficiaries of our Feeding Programme) whom they had initially written to (the penpal system still works)!

Both sides have been curious about what each other looked like and to share more about their life and likes. They realised they had similarities through some games and an art activity! But one thing they do differ in is their daily lunch. How about a LUNCH SWAP, and let’s see what our SSCians can learn from the experience?

Here’s to more Friends for Umapad interactions as we build mutually fruitful opportunities for all involved to grow and be caring and compassionate global citizens.

Thank you, Umapad Elementary School, for allowing SSC to be your friend this past decade!

Congratulations Jelly!

Of the many, she is one of 5 Cebuanas chosen to join the Philippines Women’s National Team, our SSC Warrior – JELENA SOON!

Can’t help but reminisce THEN – when Jelly was playing grassroots football around 7 years ago! Fast forward to NOW – where the Philippine Women’s Football Association recently awarded Jelly the Most Promising Player! This Mar 2023, she not only participated in the Japan Jenesys Memorial Cup in Okinawa, Japan but was also the Team Captain; and is the only Cebuana (one out of 5 locals) gearing up for the next!

We wish her the best of luck as she trains and joins the tournament in Guam this Apr 2023 in preparation for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U17 Women’s Asian Cup Indonesia 2024.

Jelly not only makes Singapore School Cebu proud but Cebu as well! And if that’s not enough, Jelly is making sports history while also being a Secondary 4 Pupil at SSC about to sit for the Cambridge IGCSE!

Spirit Week 2023 One School, One Theme… UNITED!

SSC
One School,
One Theme…
UNITED!

And Day 1 (of 5) kicks off with MONDAY MARATHON where everyone in school (Pupils, Teachers and Staff) came dressed to run and FINISH!

In fact, part of the day’s activity was SSCians writing down recent wins and forming a PAPER TRAIL of gratitude and appreciation for their strengths!
One kid in Primary School wrote: “I’m proud of myself because I am a good friend.” While in Upper Secondary, most of S4 wrote how thankful they are to have surpassed their Pre-IGCSE exams!

By participating and being one with the community, SPIRIT WEEK really brings out a more supportive learning environment @ SSC!

4 more days to go! #SSCspiritweek

Spirit Week says Bonjour!

SSC is off to Paris for Day 2 of SPIRIT WEEK 2023!

Beyond the fashion you see, is the equal opportunity provided to ALL Pupils to sashay down the runway and build up their confidence and the camaraderie of the community as classmates cheered for each other.

Big or small one’s effort may seem, but what is important is that everyone makes an effort. And by everyone, that includes our Security Guards, Maintenance and Operations Team, too (see last collage)!

Spirit Week’s WfH!

Do SSCians still remember how comfy Day 3 of Spirit Week was last 29 Mar?
With WFH (Work From Home) as the theme, it sure made for another great day showcasing our SCHOOL SPIRIT via the most comfortable bottoms, i.e. pyjamas!
And the highlight of Day 3 was doing MOVE while seated circa Distance Learning days during the pandemic! With that memory came the sharing of Jasmine from Pre-U 2 on how she made the effort every single school day to get up early and look “presentable” despite staying at home and doing school online. She looks back and is grateful for the positive changes since then, especially the transition to F2F classes.
