UBC with Mr Bob Gothong

We did not only welcome Mr Sven Clarke of UBC (University of British Columbia) to invite our SSCians anew to consider Vancouver’s top University for Higher Education but we also had an alumnus in the person of Mr Bob D. Gothong (BS Commerce, Major in Transportation and Utilities, Minor in Finance) talk about his UBC days.

More notably, our Pupils were inspired hearing what Mr Gothong has made out of his UBC education, not only in his capacity as Chairman and CEO of Gothong Southern Group of Companies but his planned SEABUS (to ply the route between Mandaue and Mactan and help alleviate traffic) and the opening of the Sugbu Chinese Heritage Museum Foundation by 1Q2020.

“Mr Gothong is so cool.”, as per an S3 Pupil. Thank you Sir for your generosity of time and wisdom.

Goodwill Games PreSchool Champion!

And for PRESCHOOL’s Goodwill Games last Saturday (Oct 26), it’s…

TEAM PH for Gold, followed by Team SG for Silver and Team UK for Bronze.

Nothing beats the PreSchoolers’ cheer performance at the start, that was golden! Plus everyone was just so eager and participative, from our PreSchoolers to their Parents and the rest of the family including the Nannies! And how about fostering teamwork and good sportsmanship? YES, all that too in PreSchool’s Goodwill Games plus major fun as can be seen in these captured Kodak moments!

Visual Arts Class in Manila!

How to get ready for their own exhibition? Our Pre-U 2 Visual Arts class with their Teacher Evar flew to Manila last 11-13 Oct 2019 to get inspired by the works of various artists at the Manila Art Fair, Pinto Museum, Yuchengco Museum, National Art Gallery and the Metropolitan Museum. Likewise accompanied by Teacher Markquee, the trip sure sparked exciting ideas for our young artists!

Study World

Why Study in the UK?

How to write a good Personal Statement?

University of St Andrews in Scotland, anyone?

Thanks to the STUDY WORLD event held at SSC last 03 Oct, in cooperation with UKEAS (UK Education Advisory Services), our Secondary and Pre-University SSCians got to discover more their higher education options in this part of the world as well!

Will You Be My Classmate – PreSchool

Precious Moments in yesterday’s “Will You Be My Classmate” event in SSC PreSchool!

What was originally an activity meant for Parents to check out how their PreSchoolers are doing in school, now has become bonding time both Parent and Child cherish!

In-Service Day

“What do you do for In-Service Day?” asked a Primary 2 Pupil over lunch with Tita Trixie. “Well…” the School President answered “…it’s like we go attend class too! Why? Because everyone needs to keep learning!”

And yes, both Teaching and Non-Teaching SSC Staff did just that last Friday (Sep 27), the first ISD for the School Year! As we reflected on our first seven weeks performance, the feedback was shared, and sessions were held to get everyone reminded of our roles and goals, learning more ways on how to reach them including #FutureProofLearning@SSC!

Go Team SSC!

Day 1 of Spirit Week

Spirit Week 2019 is here and we post this ONE PHOTO A DAY challenge!

Here’s for Day 1!

Theme: Olympic Day!

Let’s MOVE and spur up that SCHOOL SPIRIT, SSC!

ICAS Science GOLD Awardees

A huge GOLD medal (with their name engraved on it) for these 2 SSCians who scored the highest possible mark in ICAS SCIENCE, an international benchmark assessment administered by UNSW, and taken among hundreds of Pupils from Singapore! Good job Sierra Isobel Ordona! Good job Nathan Matthew Garcia! #SSCpride!

The Winningest PH Delegation to WSC

Presenting the winningest delegation from the Philippines for the Junior Division in the recent World Scholar’s Cup Tournament of Champions! What a World Scholar’s Cup journey it has been for these 9 SSCians this 2019, from Regionals in Feb, to Globals in Sep, to Yale University in Nov.

Beyond the trophies and medals that you see, there are the transformative self-discoveries and learnings that makes the whole experience even more extraordinary. Let these 9 SSCians, therefore, inspire others to try, and it all starts with the WSC Cebu Regional Round this 24-25 Feb 2020, here at Singapore School Cebu! See the poster attached!

SSCians on ICE

We push our SSCians to dare try, and hopefully, it’s ingrained in them never to give up. And that’s why when that journey ends in triumph, we are the first to give them a high five!

Once again, on a global stage, we give recognition (and a high five) to our Ice Skaters Lou Mari Ang (11 Golds, 1 Silvers), Cheska Go (3 Golds, 1 Silvers, 1 Bronze)s, Anika and Ariani Mercado (5 Golds, 6 Silvers, 2 Bronzes) for their medal haul in Skate Indonesia. For Lou Mari, this included her wins in HK as well. Good job guys!

Sun Star Cup Champion!

And we (finally) got it! A trophy for Football as SSC’s Merlion Football Club emerged NUMBER ONE in last weekend’s SUN STAR CUP for the U11 division! SSC’s Football Varsity Team for U9 also did well, reaching the Quarterfinals while U7, which was composed of mostly new players scored 1 win, 2 draws and 1 loss. Not bad for their first try.

With the heat becoming overwhelming at times, a Primary 2 SSCian was overheard telling the others: But SSCians don’t give up! That’s true indeed, we don’t! And we are not just looking at all the efforts this school year, but also of seasons past which we believe paved the way for the strongest performance ever from our Teams! Kudos also to Coaches Sheba and Bryan, SSC’s Team led by Ms Ana and to all the Parents for their guidance and support!

Taekwondo Jins!

Kiyahh!

Courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and an indomitable spirit (Kiyahh!)…these are the five tenets of Taekwondo and what we hope to also build in our P2-P3 TKD jins! Congratulations to the P2-P3 SScians who took part and moved up to the next belt level in last 14 Nov’s Taekwondo Promotion Test!

One last time… Kiyahh!

Day 5 of Spirit Week

And finally Day 5 of Spirit Week… EARTH DAY where we had Earth Hour and saved 187.75 kW of energy! This means we’ve also prevented 84kg of Carbon Dioxide release which is equal to the emission of a refrigerator running for a year! Way to end SSC’s Spirit Week 2019!

Day 4 of Spirit Week

We continue with Day 4 of SSC’s Spirit Week 2019 where each House/Class Section followed their chosen theme! Just take a look at their creative efforts! A house/class section united = one school! Cool!

Day 2 of Spirit Week

Day 2 of Spirit Week, brought to us by the House Reps of SSC!

Pyjama Day! It’s everyone’s favourite, it’s comfy, it’s fun!

With everyone dressing up in one theme, this is SSC… one school, united!

Goodwill Games House Winner!

NEW to the Goodwill Games this school year? The HOUSE vs HOUSE competition! And for Secondary & Pre-University, it was the HOUSE OF FURY (Secondary 2B) that bested 8 others while for Upper Primary School, it was the HOUSE OF PHORBES (Primary 5B) that topped 5 others!

This new addition to the Goodwill Games for these levels was very well received, as it allowed everyone in each class section to participate, eventually bringing them all closer. Ask any house and they will tell you that win or lose, they felt proud to be part of their respective houses. Great to foster loyalty in our SSCians!

Goodwill Games UPS Champion!

One last time, this time for UPPER PRIMARY SCHOOL!

And the Goodwill Games Champion for this division is… TEAM SG!

While these photos show what transpired last Tue, Oct 29 – the most fantastic learning happened leading to this event, especially the Cheerdance practice that was all the kids making!

And on D-Day itself, no Goodwill Games has seen as much support there was for each other as did UPS!

They cheered for each other, yet it was clear they each wanted to win!

They were such good sports and had high respect for the Teachers/Organisers and how the games were conducted.

They saw the upside of failure, vowing to come back next year!

What more can a school ask for, from such amazing Champions that is Upper Primary School!

Goodwill Games LPS Champion!

Photo #1 – Guess who won GOLD in LOWER PRIMARY SCHOOL’S GOODWILL GAMES held last Sat, Oct 26?

Photo #2 – Did you guess it right? It’s still the defending champion… TEAM PH!

Photo #3 – Silver went to Team SG!

Photo #4 – Bronze went to Team UK!

Photo #5 – The turnout was great and the community was festive!

Photo #6 – The LPS Pupils were very brave playing their games!

Photo #7 – While the Parents were wacky in theirs!

Photo #8 – Oh to be put on the spot to score more points for the Team!

Photo #9 – The Nannies too, had an extraordinary time playing at the Goodwill Games!

Photo #10 – In the end, it was the Term Exam (for 2 Parents, 2 Pupils and 1 Nanny) that broke the tie between 1st and 2nd place! Congratulations Team PH!

Casual Days for Taal

A BIG THANK YOU, XIE XIE and SALAMAT to the SSC Community for taking the call to action in helping the families affected by the recent Taal Eruption.

In just three days, CASUAL DAYS for TAAL (a fundraiser) amassed a total of Php 272,290! That is 81% more than the initial target of Php 150,000, which we turned over to World Vision this morning.

We also would like to express gratitude to the S3 Global Perspectives Class and Teacher Zen for spearheading this campaign. A true example of translating the SSC Mission Statement into Action!

LPS’ 100th Day

Lower Primary School too, had their 100th Day of School last Friday, making it a January 31 to remember!
“I liked everything about our 100th Day!” exclaimed a P3 Pupil.
And by ‘everything’, he meant the 100 Moves, the 100 Days of Gratitude Story, why even the 100 seconds of silence!
Our Lower Primary SSCians are now certified 100 days SMARTER!

PreSchool’s 100th Day

It’s PreSchool’s 100th Day in School!
And even though we had to postpone going to Ocean Park for it, our youngest SSCians were still filled with glee as they shouted: “Hooray, we are O’FISH’IALLY 100 Days in School today!
What a fun-filled half day it was last Friday, Jan 31 as our PreSchoolers sang, danced, played games, had snacks and did arts in celebration of 100 days of learning!
“We all may be different kinds of fish, but in this school we swim together!”

Hand Hygiene is a must!

In light of the Novel Coronavirus scare, here is a public health advisory from the Pupils, Teachers and Staff of Singapore School Cebu!
HAND HYGIENE is a must!
Follow these 8 steps and do not stop washing your hands until you are done singing “Happy Birthday”.

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year also falls in Literary Month and we wish to say Xie Xie to our Mandarin Department for preparing all the special activities to celebrate this occasion. From Hanson laoshi’s cooking to Amber laoshi’s Storytelling and the rest of the laoshi’s making firecrackers (artwork, not the real thing) with their pupils, it sure made for a fun week! Let’s not forget the Mandarin Challenge competition, too! 新年快乐 (xīn nián kuài lè) everyone!

P5 Visits ERUF

Dial 161 for ERUF.
ERUF stands for Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation.
Tell them the emergency and make sure you provide the location!
In the meantime, it helps for kids to know how to apply basic first aid like bandaging.
Thank you ERUF, for allowing our Primary 5 class to visit you in your training centre yesterday, 21 Jan.
This out-of-the-campus activity is an extension on P5’s recent English Vocabulary lesson covering “Emergencies”.
#SSCstaysafe

Spelling Bee

At SSC’s Literary Month, everyone joins and enjoys the SPELLING BEE!

Story Time with Pre-University

It’s STORY TIME! As one of the activities this Literary Month, PreSchool learnt about GRATITUDE through the narration of ‘The Giving Tree’ told by none other than our Pre-University 1 Pupils. ‘Come, Boy, sit down and rest… And the tree was happy.’ Thank You, Xie Xie and Salamat to those who are happy to give and give just like the Giving Tree.

Lit Month Kick off

XIE XIE!

SALAMAT!

SSC kicks off the NEW YEAR and DECADE celebrating multilingualism with GRATITUDE in our words via Literary Month this January 2020!

This first week back at school, we filled up the GRATITUDE WALL @ Cafe Vanda.

Holiday Carols

This year, we decided to SING! Last day of school for 2019 saw all the 15 Houses of Upper Primary to Pre-University in HOLIDAY CAROLS, performing at the Merlion Centre. It was our GIFT to each other we said, thus everyone performed their very best! And Team SSC joined in too with their recent performances from the Goodwill Games Staff Edition. Meanwhile, everyone was also treated to some carols from the PreSchool PLUS pupils. So cute!

Last 3 days of school for 2019!

Last 3 days of school for 2019 this past week and it covered a NATIVITY PLAY, an OUTREACH and a HOLIDAY PARTY! SSC is now on break starting today. Merry Christmas everyone!

Pre-U visits TERADYNE!

Learning outside the 4-walls of our classroom: Thank you TERADYNE Philippines, most especially to our Teachers for the Day, Karl and Sam for showing us what you do (so well!) and inspiring our Pre-University Pupils taking up IB Computer Science and Physics! #FutureProofLearning@SSC!

Taekwondo Belt Promotion

21 Apr: Kiyahhh! If only indeed we can TKD this pandemic away!
What will now happen to YOUTH SPORTS, and what will be it’s New Normal post-Covid19?
We usually post photos of Taekwondo Belt Promotions of Lower Primary School pupils, annually held at the SSC campus. This one was from 11-12 March, right before the campus was closed. We congratulate our young jins and remind them of the benefits of martial arts in their growth and development.
This time around, we post this event in a very different light, now pondering what the future will be for youth sports. And how about the Coaches out there, especially those whose livelihood depends on it.
This, along with many other things, is what SSC as a school, has started to prepare for.

MOVE in SSC-DL

Quarantine may have increased our SCREEN TIME but it should not decrease our MOVEMENT TIME.
MOVE, SSCians, MOVE!
Credit to our Physical Education Team of Coaches for continuing to foster good physical health despite being on SSC-DL. Meanwhile, wake up and MOVE Pre-U 1! No worries, they are just joking with their poses.

First Holy Communion & Confirmation

“DO NOT BE AFRAID”, said Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma as he opened the celebratory mass for SSC Catechists from P3 about to take their First Holy Communion and P6 for their Confirmation rites last 14 March 2020, a Saturday.
Archbishop Palma was told it was to be SSC’s last school event squeezed in as government ordered all schools to be closed in Cebu. Indeed, we were a little afraid and screened all attendees from their temperature to travel history, including the Archbishop himself!
It was a befitting end before campus closure, with the voices of the young children filling the Sacred Heart Chapel, singing:
Do not let your hearts be troubled
Do not stay afraid
It is really I who you see
I offer you all my peace
I have waited for this moment
To be with you again
In my heart you’ll remain
In your heart I’ll stay
I am with you, till the end of your days
I am with you, have faith
That I hold you
Even when you let go
And I love you,
You must know I am here. I am ever with you.
While SSC is a non-sectarian international school, we do run optional religion classes like Catechism and Bible Class starting in Primary School. And amid this pandemic, may we not only be reminded but act upon what families should likewise prioritise, and that is having a strong faith.
#SSCpray.

SSC A.C.T. Awardees

From SSC’s School President, Trixie Suarez: Current statistics show that only 1 out of 10 people who happen to chance upon a conflict will STOP AND INTERVENE.
This past week, we witnessed 2 boys who did and would like to recognise them for their extraordinary act.
FER NEUMANN, a 9-year old Primary 3 pupil, told his 2 schoolmates in conflict to STOP.
ROYCE TIO, an 8-year old Primary 2 pupil, meanwhile, physically went between his 2 schoolmates to make them stop.
They both received today SSC’s A.C.T. Award… because they were Aware, they Cared and they Took action. May these 2 boys inspire the youth of today to stand up for what is good and what is right.
Lastly, I wish to post here a quote from Albert Einstein that I recently shared with our Secondary SSCians. See 2nd photo. SSCians, A.C.T.!

Eureka 2020

Extra Extra, read all about it! This March, SSC brings us Eureka 2020 (Maths and Science Month). Inspired by Greta Thunberg’s declaration “OUR HOUSE IS ON FIRE!”, we call on SSCians to do their share in putting out the fire. Let’s hear it from PreSchool to Pre-University!

Kuya’s Feedback

SSCians are not afraid of feedback, including KUYA’S FEEDBACK on the upkeep of their homerooms. When recently Kuya’s Feedback was SAD, look at how it sprung the Pupils into action! Indeed, while we are thankful to have Kuyas in SSC who help keep our campus clean, we have to do our share too!

PreShool’s Market

Help us resolve this conflict!
Yes, as young as our PreSchoolers, we grab the opportunity to develop problem-solving skills. Thanks to Discovery Time where the current theme is “The Market”, take a look at how engaged our young learners have been!
So going back to the conflict, should the customer who complained about his ramen but already ate all of his ramen get a refund?
Do tell us your answers by commenting on this post!

Lit Month Awarding

And that’s a wrap for SSC’s Literary Month 2020! Congratulations to all the awardees! Thank You, Xie Xie and Salamat to all who took part and grabbed the opportunity to maximise their potential in this school-wide event.

Lit Month Book Launch

SSC’s Literary Month 2020 FINALE included the launch of the following:
-31 Short Stories penned by last year’s Class of Primary 5
-22 Books authored by last year’s Class of Primary
-Many proud Parents!
Keep writing original stories, SSCians!

2nd In-Service Day

One day goes a long, long way!
SSC’s Teachers and Staff are grateful for In-Service Days like last Friday for it gives them more fuel to keep going. We want to be Future-Proof, after all.
For this most recent one, it kicked off with Personal Development (and a fun walk around Boardwalk) then it focused on skills building for the Teachers. The Non-Teaching staff also had their sessions that focused on how they can continue to pour love on their work! Just so you know, Team SSC had a great, productive (In-Service) Day!

Story Time with Tita Trixie

Look at those faces from our PreSchoolers. What is going on? Well, it’s Storytime with Tita Trixie!
It’s become an annual tradition that our School President reads our PreSchoolers a story during Literary Month. When asked if they have any book suggestions for this year, the PreSchoolers had aplenty! So it was agreed that this round, we will MAKE OUR OWN STORY.
This activity didn’t only bring out the best from our PreSchoolers. It produced four books authored by them, complete with characters, setting, plot and a lesson to learn!
An Adventure by the Class of Pre-K A
Friends Help Forever by the Class of Kinder 1 A&C
Working Together by Kinder 2 A&C
The Frozen Beach by Kinder 2 B
It didn’t end there. Our PreSchoolers already have ideas on what will happen next! So perhaps Book 2 is coming next school year!

K2 Commencement Day 2020

Because we chose to see the glass half-full, we got to hold Kinder 2’s Commencement Day last 16 June 2020, full of extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime milestones!

Here’s a rundown on why it was unique, special and memorable!

-first time, it was a Virtual Commencement Day!

-first time, the Parents took care of the Graduation Photos!

-our 6-year old graduates still got to deliver solo Graduation Spiels!

-our 6-year old SSCians still got to proudly sing and dance to their Graduation song!

-27 SSCians received their diploma and are ready for Primary School!

Academic Excellence Awardee – Jaeda Quilacio

Congratulations to Batch 2020’s JAEDA ERIN QUILACIO, recipient of SSC’s ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARD!

Jaeda garnered the highest Predicted Grade for the IB Diploma and also shared the highest marks for IB DP’s Subject Group 1 (Language and Literature), Subject Group 3 (Individuals & Societies) and Subject Group 5 (Mathematics).

Her impressive academic performance paved the way for her to receive offers from UK’s Top Universities (UCL, Warwick, King’s, Manchester) and also PH’s Ateneo de Manila University (Business Management Honours Class) and Dela Salle University (Applied Economics major in Financial Economics).

Jaeda’s extra hard work and commitment to her studies was fueled by her goal to be able to study abroad. Thus, she claims it was not difficult to push herself and keep a consistent work ethic that allowed her to hurdle the rigor and heavy workload that the IB Diploma is known to be.

Jaeda also gives credit to the motivation she received from her family, friends and school. “Despite the IB being as difficult as it is, I was able to accomplish it all through the encouragement of these people, as well as satisfying the standards I had set for myself.”

Indeed, now you know what it takes to continue maximizing your potential and realising your goals! And even if you fall at times (which happens even to the best of us), you know how to get up and keep going, Jaeda!

Pre-U 2 Commencement Day 2020

‘Twas a historic first for SSC to begin with, producing its first-ever cohort of graduates, BATCH 2020.
‘Twas made even more memorable given the challenges that had to be surpassed to finish the School Year and acquire the IB Diploma amid a pandemic; to end with a Virtual Commencement Day last 18 June 2020 like no other!
CONGRATULATIONS, BATCH 2020! You did it and you make us proud!

P6 Commencement Day 2020

It was a momentous occasion, as well, for our 33 Primary 6 Pupils who officially graduated from Primary School and are now off to Secondary School.

Best described as a Virtual Commencement Day full of POEMS, last 17 June 2020 saw each P6 Graduate deliver a taped rendition of the poem they composed. This led to the School President, likewise writing 4 Poems as Commencement Day Address.

Thank you to all parents who made this event possible. This year, Parents took care of taking the graduation photos of their child, and everyone dressed up and prepped their home for their child’s Commencement Day.

UPS, Sec & PreU Watch Party

While the Lower Years spent their LAST DAY OF SCHOOL with Wet Day, for the Upper Years – they usually have a MOVIE DATE!

But of course, all cinemas are closed, but there’s now what you call a WATCH PARTY! What is genuinely heartwarming is that even though some have watched the movie choice, they still joined, because they want to be together with their classmates and friends on the last day of school!

PreSchool and LPS Wet Day

From Teacher Mia, Head of School for PreSchool and Lower Primary School:

Cheers to a one-of-a-kind SY 2019-2020!

Despite all its curveballs – look at us! We did it!

Parents, Guardians, Teachers, Pupils – we are that WE!

We made it happen!

And to celebrate all the hard work we all poured in, PreSchool and Lower Primary SSCians had yet another best day ever…WET DAY on their last day of school last 05 June!

PreSchool’s Gmeet Snack Time

Please don’t call it SOCIAL Distancing as socialisation is key in any child’s growth and development.
Here at SSC, we prefer to call it SAFE Distancing instead, to keep us protected from the virus.
Thus despite being on Distance Learning (see, Safe Distance as everyone is at home), our PreSchoolers can still socialise!
Here are some of the cute conversations overheard from their GMeet Snack Time where our youngest lot in school would have guests join them for an interaction.

SSCstay+

More than 2 MONTHS IN and with still a lot of uncertainty, it’s understandable if one feels SAD, BORED, MAD and UNMOTIVATED.

We, therefore, continue to share acts of positivity from our SSCians for our #SSCstay+ campaign.

Parent GMeet

Sunglasses Day in SSC-DL

SSCians received their Term 2 Report Card today and details of their Term 3 Exams!
It’s getting hot in here (on SSC-DL, that is) thus, we all decided to put on our SHADES today. Yes, Spirit Week days are likewise ON SSC-DL.
SSCians, stay cool and continue to work hard on your EVIDENCE OF PROGRESS.
#SSCstay+

SSCstay+

It’s been 9 weeks since the campus closed and most of us have been home. HOW ARE YOU? Am sure we’ve had our ups and downs but remain GRATEFUL. Even without prompting, we continue to receive photos from our dear SSCians sharing what they have been doing, to STAY POSITIVE amid this pandemic.

They say when you are taking the 2-year IB Diploma Programme, say goodbye to the summer in between your 1st and 2nd year!

Well it just so happens there’s really nowhere to go this summer too; thus, here’s Teacher Mark Alceso to work on ToK with Batch 2021!

His Summer Special included:

RLSs (Real-Life Situations), KQs (Knowledge Questions) and the TOK journal
Considering Perspectives
The TOK Journal
Thanks Teacher Mark for your time and dedication. Graduating SSCians, be like WARRIORS, be brave and finish strong!

World Vision’s 5k Campaign Challenge

Proud to share this article that mentions SINGAPORE SCHOOL CEBU and SSCians who recognise the active and positive role they can play in the world community, especially amid these challenging times!

1st Day of School for SY2020-2021

1st Day of School!

It was smooth, and everyone was ready!
There was fun, and there was learning!
The energy was at an all-time high!
There’s a pandemic, after all.
We are GRATEFUL to be here still and embarking on another school year.

#sscWARRIORS

Kit Drive Thru Pick up

4 more nights and it’s the 1st day of school for SSC!

Because we shall begin the School Year on SSC-DL (Distance Learning), we had to turn over the kits containing the Pupil’s Books, Materials and a bunch of School Supplies this past week!

To make it most safe, we chose a DRIVE THRU system. Watch this!

Parent Orientations

‘Twas great to see everyone again last week for 13 various Pre-Opening Orientations! Despite the challenging times we are in, SSC’s shout out this School Year is: 敢于战斗 gǎn yú zhàn dòu! We can FIGHT this, SSCians!

7 Days more to go before SY2020-2021 unravels! Around 7 more Orientations this week to complete all the preparations!

#sscWARRIORS

2 more weeks to go before SY2020-2021 begins

From Teacher Janice Ceniza, Head of School for Secondary & Pre-University:
Learning is an essential part of our growth. Every day, we are given an opportunity to do and be better. Here in SCC, we NEVER STOP LEARNING! This past week’s schedule alone proves that. From Classroom Management to Leadership to the IB Diploma Programme, we continue to acquire skills and widen our perspectives with the goal of creating more meaningful and authentic experiences as we open the new school year on SSC-DL. What’s even more enriching is working with external experts, in the person of Ms Cecille, our Academic Consultant and Ms Padma who the Senior Management Team and I just had a workshop with this morning on building our leadership and communication skills. This way, we can model to our Pupils what it takes to be an #sscWARRIOR!
Did we forget fun? Of course not! Learning and fun always go hand in hand here at SSC. From our School President, Ms Trixie Suarez came the “Toilet Paper Challenge” which resulted in loads of laughter and some physical activity that we all needed from those looong Zoom sessions.
2 more weeks to go before SY2020-2021 begins; go #sscWARRIORS!

Incoming S4 and PreU2 Summer Special with Teacher Alfonso

20 more days to go before SSC’s 10th year, SY2020-2021 kicks off this 18 Aug! Thanks to Teacher Alfonso, incoming S4 and Pre-U2 got to revise their BIOLOGY lessons this summer.
Topics included Cellular Respiration and Ecology. Amid this pandemic, more than ever, we need to learn deeper how we can protect our bodies from viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 that causes COVID-19. And through science, find a cure! #sscWARRIORS

Collaboration and Authentic Learning

From Teacher Mia Bacolod, SSC’s HEAD OF SCHOOL for PRIMARY SCHOOL.

Guess what I love and appreciate the most about our Summer 2020 preparations so far: COLLABORATION and AUTHENTIC LEARNING.

Collaboration in how we discuss, problem solve and apply together as a Team, learning not just from one source but from each other. And despite the online platform, collaboration soars!

Authentic Learning in how we analyse, reflect and then come up with best practices we get from our training and webinars to deliver the best for our context.

From our Teaching Model, to our Lesson Plans, in our chosen Applications and LMSs…it starts with us, TEAM SSC! Next, we collaborate and have authentic learning experiences with our SSCians. All that starts this August 18, as we kick off SSC’s 10th School Year, this time on SSC-DL (Distance Learning). #proudtobeanSSCteacher

P1 English Summer Special with Teacher Caryl

4 and a half weeks to go before the new School Year begins.

For this extraordinary summer, we continue with Summer Revision classes.

Here’s Teacher Caryl doing so for P1 English. It’s good to see our SSCians continuing to log in and learn!

Thank you, Teacher Caryl for making the time and the effort amid this pandemic!

P6 Summer Special with Teacher Judil

Primary 6 is off to Secondary School this SY2020-2021! Are you ready?

Teacher JUDIL says yes, but to be sure, as Mathematics is even more challenging in Secondary 1, she spent some hours with her pupils revising this past week!

It was back to relearning how to compute the circumference and area of Circles and Composite Figures. But the best takeaway was learning from Teacher Judil how to remember formulas through Mnemonics!

Thanks Teacher Judil for making our recently graduated P6 SSCians more ready for S1 Mathematics!

PreS Summer Special with Teacher Maris

It’s SUMMER, but here’s something SPECIAL for our staying-home, staying-safe SSC PreSchoolers!

Last 01 July 2020, TEACHER MARIS brought her recently graduated K2 class to… JURONG BIRD PARK, SINGAPORE!

Teacher Maris has personally been there (see her picture on the 2nd collage), thus with the use of much CREATIVITY and IMAGINATION, she brought her K2 kids there too. Oh how excited was everyone watching Jurong Bird Park’s “High Flyer” show!

Now guess what? In this Summer Special session for our PreSchoolers, Teacher Maris also got to revise these K2 lessons:

-all about transportation (airplane, MRT, bus)

-animals (food, habitat, survival)

That’s not all, Amber Laoshi joined in too, thereby revising as well how to call the animals, describe their traits in… MANDARIN!

Thanks to Teachers Maris and Amber Laoshi for this very special treat! SSC is running complimentary Summer Special sessions for its returning pupils from 01-17 July.

Presidential Excellence Awardee – Danica Tan

And the first-ever recipient of SSC’s PRESIDENTIAL EXCELLENCE AWARD is… DANICA BELLE TAN! Congratulations!

Recognising an SSCian’s top achievement not only in the academics but also in leadership and service, this award is given only at the Awards Committee’s discretion led by the School President. And for Batch 2020, it was a unanimous decision to hand over this award to Danica.

In the field of academics, Danica received the SUBJECT GROUP DISTINCTION AWARD for having the highest mark for IB Diploma Programme’s SCIENCES (Subject Group 5) and sharing the highest marks for INDIVIDUALS & SOCIETIES (Subject Group 3). She also received the CITIZENSHIP AWARD for her OUTSTANDING CONDUCT marks since Secondary 4. Danica has also been consistently chosen as the House Representative of her cohort, ever since the school enacted it. This past school year, the House Representatives from Secondary and Pre-University elected her to sit as their President. Danica, meanwhile, has received offers for her 1st choices at both Ateneo de Manila University (BS Management Engineering) and De La Salle University (BS Industrial Engineering).

In her speech during BATCH 2020’s virtual Commencement Day last 18 June 2020, Danica had this to share.

“When I first heard of the Presidential Excellence Award, I knew that I wanted it. So when Tita Trixie told me that I was the recipient of this award, I was euphoric. I did it! I got the award that I dreamt day and night of having. I’ve made my Parents proud! However, as I began writing this speech, it hit me. I wouldn’t have received this if it weren’t for my classmates.

(House of) Champions, you entrusted me with the responsibility of leading our class. But now, I realise that a leader doesn’t mean having all the answers. Being a leader doesn’t require you to be the most intelligent or innovative among the bunch. Because let’s be honest, I’m neither. It isn’t also all about making history, nor is it about building a legacy. A leader is one that is primarily able to respect his or her peers and listen to what they can bring to the table. Someone that sees extraordinary potential when others just see the ordinary. A leader is nothing without his or her people, just like how I wouldn’t be anywhere close to where I am today without each of you.”

From the above, here are takeaways readers of this social media post can be reminded of:

FOR THE YOUTH: Do not be scared to dream and want something big and badly!

FOR THE ADULTS AND LEADERS: Being a leader is not easy; needs a lot of sacrifice and humility. But we soldier on because the passion and purpose of making a positive change for the common good burns stronger!

And lastly…

FOR DANICA FROM SSC’S SCHOOL PRESIDENT: “With the armour that is the SSCian in you, we look forward to your next chapter in your life, applying all that you have learnt and more than ever due to this pandemic, creating a world we prefer to live in, than the one we left behind. Thank you for using part of your speech to induct SSC’s Alumni Association (See the last photo in this post). We shall see you all again this June 2021 (it’s a date)!” – Tita Trixie

Lower Primary’s Night of Music

On top of our school day, how about we gather Lower Primary School as well for a NIGHT OF MUSIC?
What a treat it was last 01 Oct spending time with our Primary 1-3 SSCians and their families where we played NAME THAT TUNE, got wowed by PUPILS’ MUSICAL PERFORMANCES and formed our own ORCHESTRA from homemade instruments! After, kids only had this to say: ENCORE!

World Teachers’ Day

HAPPY WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY to SSC’s Faculty Team composed of 72 hard working, dedicated and full-of-heart educators!
It was good to see each other again and have this photo opportunity last Friday, 02 Oct @ the campus (with face shield, mask and safe distancing, of course). Missing from these photos are those who are currently not in Cebu and some who couldn’t make it.

PreSchool’s Pyjama Night

PYJAMA NIGHT with hot chocolate, anyone? SSC PRESCHOOL says…
YES! THAT’S US, LAST NIGHT!
And what a blast it was from jumping on the bed, story time, games and crafting dreamcatchers as a COMMUNITY, while at home keeping safe from a pandemic!
‘Til our next community bonding, PreSchool Warriors!

School Assembly with Shion Iimura

On SSC-DL, we continue to hold a SCHOOL ASSEMBLY at the start of the week! And the one for Secondary & Pre-University has been featuring some international guests! Like previous SSCian SHION IIMURA.
Hear how an event in SSC paved the way for her to want to become a Doctor. And likewise, hear what SSC taught her that she carries up to this day!
Thank you Shion for spending time with us; we are so proud of you! All the best in your University journey!

In a makeover challenge in Secondary and Pre-University level, here are the creations that landed in the top 5 spots!

Non-Screen Activities

On SSC-DL, it’s called NSA.

Grandparents’ Day

Let’s remember and celebrate our dear GRANDPARENTS this Sunday, 13 Sep, on their special day!

At SSC, we invited our Grandparents these past 2 days to join us in our Distance Learning! Some “zoomed” in from the US, Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan and other parts of the Philippines and as young as 82 years old, they danced, they sang, they learnt how to unmute and shared the following pieces of advice for the youth too:

Be Grateful!
Take care of your siblings, of one another!
Eat more home-cooked meals!
Be always respectful to your elders!
Pray!
Just do it, try new things!
Listen to your Parents!
Remember, FAMILY is most important!

Tears were shed as well, as some Grandparents shared how long they have not seen nor hugged their Grandkids due to the lockdowns and safety risks from COVID-19. Thus, we hope this event somehow brought them joy, knowing we are all thinking about them and asking that they continue to stay safe! HAPPY GRANDPARENTS’ DAY!

SSC Family Safety Culture

Because we are on Distance Learning, the SAFETY DRILL in-campus at the start of the school year expanded to the home, in what we now call the SSC FAMILY SAFETY CULTURE!

With the rest of the family and household present, this school event, in turn, reached more people in the community, promoting SAFETY and PREPAREDNESS as a practice and way of life!

From PreSchool to Pre-University, SSCians, including their Teachers and the rest of their family and household, among others:
-learnt how to create the Family’s Grab Bag,
-agreed on their SEA (Safe Evacuation Area) in case of evacuation,
-memorised which numbers to call (117 or 911),
-know their options if trapped in a vehicle submerged in flood.

Thank you to safety expert Mr DENNIS “SHIO” CORTES for sharing his tips and expertise! #SSCstaysafe. #SSCyeswecan. #SSCpray. #sscWARRIORS!

PreSchool’s Virtual School Tour

For our returning PreSchoolers, they sure miss going to school, as in, the SSC Campus. For NEW Pupils, some may have never been there before!
Solution? VIRTUAL SCHOOL TOUR!
And the children’s reactions are just priceless (swipe to see their faces and comments, too)!
Don’t worry kiddos, one day we will all be back there again. In the meantime, just continue on with your amazing discoveries and learning on SSC-DL!

Upper Primary School’s Game Night

It’s been exactly a week since Upper Primary School’s GAME NIGHT (last 09 Oct, Fri) and what a night it was! So much fun and laughter but also, HOUSE POINTS & PRIZES from the following games:
Bingo the Riddle: What has a head and a tail but no body?

The Price is Right: Whoever is closest in guessing the selling price, wins the item!
Most important of all, what a successful community bonding activity! Truly SUPER are our UPS Warriors and their families!

PreSchooler’s Helping @ Home

Not only are our PreSchoolers continuing their academics from home,
they are HELPING @ HOME too! And through chores, they become responsible and feel good too;
that they are part of the Team! #sscWARRIORS!

PreSchool’s It’s PIAZZA Time

PreSchool has a NEW SUBJECT this School Year, running 2x a week.
It’s Piazza Time, we call it!
And the curriculum? EMERGENT!
We study and discover based on what the Pupils in the class are INTERESTED in!
1st session had everyone just talking about the coronavirus… but look where each section’s topic has led to! Always ready for amazing discoveries, that’s our SSC PreSchool Warriors!

Friday Socials & Birthday Snacks

What about SOCIALISATION amid Distance Learning?
Recognising the importance of this aspect of a child’s growth and development, FRIDAY SOCIALS and BIRTHDAY SNACKS were recently launched on SSC-DL.
LEADERSHIP skills were also honed as this was organised by the House Representatives and Assistants from each class.
#sscWARRIORS – they don’t give up, they keep going!

Lower Secondary’s Trivia Night

Community-building school events are the norm and aplenty at SINGAPORE SCHOOL CEBU. Currently on Distance Learning, we thought – why not continue, and all the more we need it during these challenging times! Thus, for Lower Secondary, their Department Special was a fun and exciting TRIVIA NIGHT! Let’s watch this!

Upper Primary’s Zombie Apocalypse

For UPPER PRIMARY this time,
things got CREEPY
on OCTOBER THIRTY!
‘Twas a ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE
and UPS Warriors came – hooray
to create more fun MEMORIES
of yet another GREAT school day!

Lower Primary’s Slumber Party

“It was so much fun! It was really like Trick or Treat!”, exclaimed a Primary 3 Pupil on Lower Primary School’s SLUMBER PARTY last 30 Oct.
“I did my best and tried not to laugh! I covered my mouth!” another Pupil shared for the ‘Try Not To Laugh’ challenge.
How fun (and comfortable!) it was to be in our favourite pyjamas on an SSC-DL school day and accomplish various tasks via Breakout rooms that served as our Trick or Treat activity! And just like PreSchool, it was all packed in a personalised souvenir mug and ready for a drive-thru pick-up! Another memorable day of school for our LPS SSCians, despite being on Distance Learning!

PreSchool’s Costume Party

There’s no Trick but TREATS for everyone as our PreSchoolers spent the last school day of October with a COSTUME PARTY! Look how cute our little SSCians were in their amazing costumes! Same with our PreSchool Teachers who each operated a virtual booth with tasks to be completed before anyone can get their treat! Once complete (treats all packed in a personalised souvenir mug), a drive-thru was organised so our PreSchool Warriors can get a hold of their goodies!
Enjoy your Treats, PreSchoolers! Don’t forget to brush your teeth after!

Living Rosary

Pandemics need PRAYER, PERSEVERANCE and PURPOSE…
not panic!
Good to have the Roman Catholics in our school community gather last Wednesday afternoon for our annual LIVING ROSARY.
Normally, we have our Catechists as readers and choir, but this year we asked our
Security Guards, Maintenance Staff and other Admin Personnel to do the job instead.
And they did it with confidence and a lot of heart!
